Mrs. Nicholas Lang, who was operated on for abdominal trouble last week is reported as getting along nicely, though she will be a patient at St. Joseph hospital tor several weeks Mrs Beardsley, the milliner, has just returned from the wholesale millinery and trimming establishme its with her fall styles of street and ready-to wear hats. She also ' has left a few summer hats which she will close out at less than cost. Burt Mann came in last evening from Cardwell, Missouri, where he has been living for two years past. He will accompany his wife home the last of this week. Mrs. Mann has been, visiting here for several weeks. W. H Eichhorn, of Bluffton, was here today, as a sort of an advance guard to the Great Northern Indiana Fair. After a careful inspec 1 tion at this early time he pronounces the fair as being the best ever, and will return when the fair proper will be in fall blast.

CARRIER ARRESTED Robbed A letter Os Ten Dollars But Was Detected And Confessed. Hiram A . McElwain, - widely known in the southern part of thia county as a government mail carrier, on a route out of < )hio, was am sted yesterday by Deputy United States Marshal Sells and taken to Toledo for trial on a i charge of stealing ten dollars from a letter posted by Mrs. Ida Alspangh and addressed to rhe Larkin Soap Co. Mrs. Alspiugh took the carrier’s receipt for the letter, but, as it never reached its destination, an investigation was put under wav and it was disclosed that the letter hid never been turned into the Ohio City office for uispatoh. The carrier under the rule of the postal department bei ing required to receipt for the let--1 ter to the sender and in turn to take the postma'ter's receipt when the 1 letter was left at that office. McElwain pleaded not guilty and was held to answer to the court in the sum of five hundred dollars. He hopes to secure his liberty by furnishing ball. It is stated that the accused made a statement at Toledo in which he confessed the crime and acknowledged that he had made a serious mistake. The excuse given was that he needed the money badly atjthe time, last July, and that he had since replaced it. — Van Wert Bulletin.
