They are usually a sour, green aspect and bear little resemblance to their betters of the late summer and fall. For cooking purposes they are satisfactory after an unusual amount of stewing, but for eating—call the doctor.

The first reports ; say that sixty men are killed and j over one hundred injurtd. The I dozen dead and wounded are being brought ashore. The Bennington had been ordered in all haste to Port Hartford to assist the Monftoi. The Wyoming is reported disabled and helpless thirty miles off that port. Later reports, however, say that the Wyoming is able to reach Port Hartford safely. Bandiego, Cal., July 21.—Later reports say that at least fifty were killed and every man of the crew of 278 were injured. A section of the deck was carried away and the ship is listing ladly, will probably sink. The officers of the Bennington are Commander Lucien Young; Lieut. A. F. Yates; Ensigns C. P. Wade, U. K. Mrs. Ed Gross returned to Van Buren, today, after a visit with Mrs. William Foreman here. The remains of Ernst Dietrich, who died at Fort Wayne of peritonitis, were shipped through here today to Schum, O. Dr. C- V. Connell, wife and babe returned last evening from Mount Clemens. Mich, where the doctor was taking a oourse of treatment. George Venis and son Carl, of Marion, arrived in the city at noon. They will go to ,'Decatur tonight to attend the funeral of Mrs. Venis' sister, Mrs. Sarah Robinson. —Bluffton Banner. Nine saloons will go out of business in Randolph county at the expiration of the licenses under which they are now operated. In one ward of Winchester six saloons will be closed. The salc.on in the hotel will be closed and the antisaloon people claim the town will be made dry just as soon as pos sible. The one saloon in Ridgeville will be closed by a remonstrance against the issuance of a license The one saloon in Parker City will be closed in a short time and Union City will be the one place in Randolph county where saloons are operated, under a license — Portland Review. The Gtand Rapids railroad hue completed the grading for its epur track to the interurban property and the steel will be delivered in a few days, part of the consignment bavmg already arrived. Women are fast supplanting men as station agents on railroads, according to railroad officials. The reason infor this is found in the fact that women prove more efficient. The Lake Erie & Western seems to be the leader in the move ment. All of the women are expert telegraphers. They receive and send train orders and handle ' all the telegraph business at the 1 stations at which they are employed. They sell tickets, receive and dispatch freight, handle the express business and carry the mail to and from the postoffice, .'he women agents ara piid on an average of |SO per mo nth.
