It is taken as an indication that Mr Roosevelt has transferred hie affections from Taft to Root and that from now on the latter must be considered the favorite of the administration. —Sentinel. Contempt for the law is contempt for the will of the majority. Governor Hanly is right. A public officer who takes an oath to en. force the laws and breaks that oath at the behest of law breakers is not a man to be trusted or believed. The place to change the law is m the legislature. C- Helm, of Decatur, officiated of' the Rebekah lodge on Friday even ing of aet week. Mrs Levi Baumgartner, son and daughter, John and Pearl, of Decatur, visited their people here a Jew days the last and first of this week. Rev. String, wife and son. Mrs. Henry Eichhorn and daughter, Minnie, and Miss Nellie Neader houser were guests of Mrs. Mary Neaderhouser last Friday.

Benjamin Baumgartaer and family, H>e Misses Sarah and Louvina Baumgartner and Messrs Walter and Cvrus Baumgartnfer of Bluffton, paid our townslady and family a visit on the Sabbath. The I. O. O. F. installed the following officers on Wednesday evening of last week: Jacob Augsbur ger, N- G.; J. Djuglass, French V. G.; Lorenzo Dunbar, secretary. Also on Friday evening the Rebekabs installed Mrs. E nma Eckroate N. G.; Mrs. Dr. A. Haugbtoe. V. G. ;and Mies Lena Adler, eecntary. Silas Kizer, the most observing farmer of Hartford township, and perhaps us Adams county, brought us some stalks of wheat for inspection, where just above the joint the straw is about two inches in length, and on dissection are found living worms with no visible sign of ingress or egress and are very unsightly when exposed under the magnifying glass. He has sent specimens to Washington, and to the Indiana experimental station. George Heller and wife were seriously hurt on Monday afternoon near this place by the horse they were driving, becoming entmled with a chain attached to a calf, resulting in upsetting the vehice and injury. Mr. Silas Kizer just favored us with a report from the experimental station at Washington, informing him that the insect found in the wheat plant, is the larvae of one of the four winged flies, a speiimen of isosma, and do serious injury. •

Jnly 12—The New Yorker, a newspaper, whose editor was arrested for criminal libel on statements made about Miss Alice Roosevelt's actions whih visiting at Cincinnati, published a retraction today. By United Press News Association. Cleveland. 0., July 12—We must not go beck we are a unit; that's the way the matter stands now, said President Burns of the assem hly to three hundred Knights of Labor this morning President Faulkner of the glass workers union said, that the Burns crowd would not l>e saked to return to the convention. They will have to ask to come back he said. CANTON GETS IT Ohio City Secures Franchise From Fort Wayne. By United Press News Association. Canton, Ohio, July 12—The directors of the Canton Athletic club tonight acoepted the franchise of the Fort Wayne Central league taam and will succeed that city in the league. Canton will play out Fort Wayne s schedule the games to have been played in Fjrt Wayne being played in Canton. Indianapolis, July 12—Governor Hanly will separately notify the sheriff in each county in the state where race meets will be held, that he will expect the sheriffs to suppress bookmaking. The Decatur Egg Case company filed suit today against William Williams to replevin one sorrel horse, bay horse, grey horse, grey mare, two wagons and set of harness, all being valued at |3OO. She was tumble to move the authorities nt the poetoffiet department and was about to go home lu despair when a friend suggested that it might l>e worth while for her to see the president. With much effort she summoned courage an<l apiwared at the White House The president received her In a moat friendly manner and after hearing her story took her application and wrote a strong but brief Indorsement on the back of It. Rhe hurried in triumph to the |M*toffice department. The official to whom she presented the application frowned and pondered over it for some time and then wrote under the president’s Indorsement "Tbl* being a fourth class office, the president doe* not have the appointing power.” The application was handed back to her. and she went away In deep distress and was again preparing to return home when another friend told her by all means to take the pa|>er back to the president, so that he might see bow his Indorsement bad been received. When the president read It be wrote under the last indorsement. "While the president doe* not have the appointing power In this office, he has the appointment of the |>oatmaster general.’' and. summoning hl* secretary. President Grant directed him to accompany til— Indy to the department and In person deliver her application to the postmaster general. She received the commission before she left the office.
