Smith, a former pastor here, now living in Tennessee, is here visiting old friends, and will conduct services tomorrow, both morning and evening at the Baptist church. Mich., this morning, after making a pleasant visit here with friends. Larry Warijg and Martin Mylott were at Huntington yesterday, looking after business pertaining to the mitten factory. Mr and Mrs. Al Stemen returned tj Fort Wayne this morning. While here they were the guests ot Mr and Mrs. Divid Liby. Unclaimed letters are reported at the pistoffioe for Clarence Deff. Clarence Cummins, Mrs. Cora ’ Laws, Vernon Reinhalt. William Hughs. The funeral of M’ss Bessie Mir ’ Sheets was held this morning at ten o’clock, at the Mount Pleasant church, and a largv number was in attendance. MANY LOST Twenty People Drowned in Accident on on Mississippi. Special Telegram To The Democrat New Orleans, June 3—Late re porta show that at least twenty lives were lost in tie collision of the H. M. Carter steamer with a railroad bridge on the Mississippi river at midnight. The boat broke Completely in two. Captain Carter is among the lost. David Fox, of Berne, was a business caller here today. James Chronister made a business trip to Urbana tdday. Mrs J. J. Hofer went to Marion today, to Sunday with rein tives. This team defeated Geneva by a six to three, and if the Rosenthals can score a victory it wil; draw a line on the relative strength of Decatur against Geneva. Finley Smith, of Markle, Ind., was in our city thia morning search ing for hia fifteen year-old brother. Jesse Smith, who ran awiy from his home at Markle some time yesterday. Mr. Smith bad a long talk with Marshal Green concerning the boy's whereabouts, the cause of his leaving h une and the direction to look. From what can be learned the voung man was seen in thi> city yesterday afternoon and reports received by Mr. Smith from Spencerville state he was seen there last evening. Mr. Smith gave the marshal a clear description of the voung fellow and instructed him to arrest the young man on sight and hold him for further orders Tie entire family is at a loss to know why he left home.
STEEL CARS Now Being Used on the New York Central Road. Special Talegram To The Democrat Philadelphia. June 2—An order for one hundred and fifty all steel passenger oars has been reotdved by the American Car and Foundry company of Berwick. It is the first time that an American railroad has made st el cars for pasBenger traffic with the single exception of the New York unde ground road. It is expjots I. however, that the prsent wooden cars will tie generally superceded by Bteel cars Is-fore long. The steel cars are stronger than wooden cars; they are non combustible; they do not shatter in wrecks, and they are said by experts to be safer and more economi cal in every way.
