David Werlmg, commissioner for the first district, was in the city from Preble today Will Zwick returned this morning from Chicago, where he was attending to furniture business. E. A. Mann and Ross Mallonee went to New Haven this morning to attend to oarjienter work. Miss Bata Schamerloh went to P»rt Wayne last evening to visit for a few days with relatives. Mrs Davis and daughter arrived this morning from Geneva and are the guests of Mrs John Stone burner. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jones of Willshire, passed through our city last evenng enroute to Fort Wayne. The Eastern Stars will meet this evening at their lodge room at aev ( -n o'clock to install officers for the ensuing year. Misses Martha Coverdale and Catherine Bennett arrived today from Bluffton, and are the guests of Miss Marguerite Hughes. Miss Mayme Terveer «est this morning for Lafayette, being called there by telegram announcing the serious illness of her uncle. The band will meet this evening at the Loch &• Dirkson hardware store at 7 o’clock for general re hearsal. All members are request, ed to be present. Miss Ruth Leia Meyers of Upland jiassed through our city this morning enroute to Fort Wayne to visit with her aunt. While here she was the guest of Mrs. Nettie Schrock. Dan Haley left last night for Fairfield county. Ohio, being called there to attend the bedside of his brother, George Haley, who is verv low with oan'er of the liver. He was accompanied by his son, Nate Haley. Governor-elect Hanley favors the erection of a new hospital for the insane to be known as the Southern Indiana hospital. If erected, it would be located in some city in the southwestern i>art of the state, probably Terre Haute or Vincennes.
The funeral services of Russel, the two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs Elwood Stevens, was held this afternoon at the house on Line street at two o’clock. The Rev. John C. Whitejconducted the servi oes and interment was made in Maplewood cemetery. The floral offering was beautiful and profuse. A farmer’s wife near Butler shot and killed herself because she thought she had'too much to do. She was young and had only seven small children to take care of, be sides cooking for a crew of corn shelters. Beats all how a woman oanjkiok about a little work like that. But then she was young. Clarence Dullaghan, a former Decatur boy, who for the i»ast six years has been in the regular army, being quartered in California, arrived home Wednesday evening, and exi>ects to make this his future home. His time in the army nas expired, His brother Frank, who joined at the same time, has reenlisted for three years mere, and will stay at the same place.

Charles Kintz returned today from a business trip at Fort Wayne. Miss Ada Cowan went to Pleasant Mills today to spend Sunday with relatives. Mrs. McDonald returned to Berne today. While hero she was the guest of friends. John Smitley was in from Jefferson township today, looking after business matters. Mrs. Moses, who has been suffering with a seige of la grippe, is some better today. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Roop and son returned today from Marion, where they were visiting relatives. Miss Mabel Erwin returned today from Fort Wayne, where she made a pleasant visit with friends. Misses Hazel Grove and Alice Six by arrived today from Bluffton, and are guests of Miss Marie Allison. Rev. Brown arrived today from Auburn, preparatory to holding servoes at the Christian church next Sunday. Misses Myrtle and Mary Kizer returned to Linn Grove today. They were enroute from Pleasant Mills whore they visitea relatives. J. Z. Brickley, of Bluffton, has been in our city several days, ex plaining the virtues of life insurance through the company he represents. A Sprunger * Co., shippers, have broken previous records of large shipments. On last Saturday they shipped six car loads of stock. Their shipments have been very heavy for some time.—Berne Wit ness.
The police were called out last evening on a kidnapping case which however, after they had gained the true sHte of affairs, proved to be utterrly false as no attempt was even being made. The parties all reside in the North part of the city and have been having considerable trouble of late. In all the townships arrangements have been made for the election of road supervisors. In this township the elections will be held at the Chapman, Debolt and Brandy terry seiiool houses and the Ellsworth farm. Some lively scraps will likely occur in several of the districts. Some of the county superintendents of the state are considering the adoption of the rule whereby the applicants for teacher’s licenses wll be limited to three examina tions, and if they do not succeed in getting the proper jier cents in that time, to prohibit them from making application again until the following year. The C. Y. M. club are busily engaged in selling tickets for their pedro ]>arty that will be held at their club rooms on Thursday evening, January 19th. The boys are working hard and will endeavor to make this event a good one, as they have the reputation of being fine entertainers. The admission will be fifty cents. J. H. Stone celebrated his 69th birthday yesterday with a family reunion. Dr. L W. A. Luckey and wife, Indianapols, Ind.; Frank Stone and wife, Fort Wayne, Ind.; R. C. Stone and wife, Muncie, Ind., and Victoria Stone. He was the recipient of several elegant pesents. M r Stone is one of the old citizens of Decatur, coming here in the year of 18«4. Otto Mumma, the young man who was fined |2 and costs for slapping Miss Grace Gerwig in the face, is not laying the fine out in jail. He did not have the money to pay the fine, but called upon his mother for assistance. She went his surety for the amount of the bond and he stayed the docket. If the fine is not paid by the young man in the prescribed length of tme his mother will have to pay it for him or he will have to go to jail to lay it out. —Bluffton News
