V wUM The legislative lobby nay new proceed, Governor Hanley s inaugural ad I dress sparkled with good phraseology and good intentions It w to | be hoped that his political association will not obetr ict the pathway and cause him to even falter i'rom being a real and strenuous governor Phe pardon of William E Hid shaw will find an almost universal sentiment < ■’ approval throughout Indiana The press has manifested his innocence from the first, and the press seldom if ever mistaken in its analysis. Governor Durbin may not have many things ’to h s credit, but this official clemency n favor of a reasonable doubt, will cover a multitude of grand stand plays, with which he was the limit. Senator Fairbanks has tendered his resignation as a -enator. although he propo-e- to held on to that which he has. until the ast day in the astern, n. It has ' :> een intimated that could he have found any precedent or g. o. p law—the only kind that is good now—he would have tenaciously and devotedly have served the action and the great state oi Indiana as vice president and senator both at one and the same time. His resignation is the stroke that killed father. Governor Hanlev should have it framed and prrserve it with a tenderness and devotion that is faultless. The weakest part of retiring Governor' Durbin's message is his explanation of his debt-paying record. His Rijiper bill explara tion is weak, in that while his! claims of misdoing at the southern reformatory may Fave -err.;- basis they are not so strong a- wa- the showing of misdoing- in 1201 when the democrats in the legislature were trying to investigate the institution and expose the wrongs, and when they were obstructed by G overn< r Dull in ar.d the rtpublican majority. Bisides, Governor Durbin promised an exposure that would justfy the Ripper bill, and he not only failed to make it, but abandoned his case by asking the board to resign on other grounds. —Sentinel.
