Orville C- McLanghln, of Portland. has been chosen as chief iournal clerk of the house. This is the ’ third legislative session in which he has h Q ld important positions. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jones of Pleasant Mills, wero shopping in our city today, Mr. and Mrs. William Hill, of Pleasant Mills, were shopping in the city today. Dick Dalton, of Huntington, was in the city last evening, a guest of Miss Mary Heffner. Gus Rosenthal and Clarence Epstein were guests of friends at Willshire last evening. Mrs. J. Buhler, who has been sick for some time with the lagrippe, is reported as improving. Mrs. J. Corson arrived today from Fort Wayne, and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Taylor. Miss Anna Adler arrived today from Fort Wavne, and will visit for a few days with Miss Lila Hoffman Bishop Henry Spellmeyer, of Cincinnati, will preside at the annual North Indiana conference, which will be held at Portland, beginning April 4. Patten # Perrv in “Jerry from Kerry” will show at the opera house next Wednesday, January 1. This is a strong company and will no doubt please the Decatur theatregoers. The "My Friend from Arkansaw” company arrived this morning from Van Wert, Ohio, and will show this evening at the opera house. This company is a good one, having a fine reputation, and will no doubt put up a first-class performance. John Trostel, formerly surveyor of Wells county, but for two years a resident of Lawrence county, Tennessee, has been elected surveyor of his new home county. This again but demonstrates that Indiana talent and genius is recognized, wheiever it may be. ’Squire Smith had the honor of performing his second Xvedding oer emony of the year today, uniting Miss Clara Adair and Mr. John Clayton in the holy bonds of wed lock. The happy young couple live i in Allen county near Hoagland. The 'squire is certainly starting the naw year right. Williard Steele informed qs tooay that he had scraped all the snow off his pond, and that the same was now in elegant condition for stating. The ice is smooth and slick as glass. He has gone to considerable I expense in getting the pond in this j shape, and will charge all skaters i the small sum of ten cents for their ! pleasure. The instiI tution will be known ns the L.-soy { School cf Home Culture, and will he located in Highland Park. The 'course will cover two years, and that it is aimed especially for ' young women just out of college and those wl o are contemplating matrimony. The school will open next September and will be conducted on the residence plan.

Miss Lola Ford returned to Geneva this morning, after making a pleasant visit here with Mrs. Lawrence Smith. Two undertakers from Huntington are among the freaks in the make-up of the present legislature. Some “stiff” legislation can be counted on. Fred Patterson returned to Indianapolis todav to resume his school work in the dental department, after spending the holidays with his parents. This is Fred’s last year at school, which will close in June. He has not fully decided where he will locate, having several places in view. During this present term he expects to take a complete course in porcelain work, | and make this a side line with bis dental work. Domseif will conduct the services, and interment will be made in the Fuelling cemetery. Mr. Samuel Epstein has sold his interest in the Bell clothing house to Mr. Homer Friedman, formerly of Decatur. Mr. Epstein has not ! yet decided upon a location. The C. Y. M. C- club will this I evening give an informal ball at the ! club rooms in the Studahaker building This dance will only include the members of the club and a fine time will no doubt be had. The music will be furnished by Master John Wemhoff. One week frem Saturday will be the election of road supervisors. The trustees will post a written or printed notice in three public places in the district, and the election is under the direct supervision of the trustees. Arrangements for these elections are going forward in all the townships of the county. The tax rate in Bluffton, or that part of the city situated in Harrison township, is $4.48 per hundred according to the official figures made out. The rate would be just one dollar less on the hundred were it not for the fact, that the one per cent voted to the aid of the C. B. C. is counted in this year.—Bluffton Bunner.
