Houlahan. the new general superintendent of the Clover Leaf, began his duties at midnight "Wednesday, coming to this city from St. Louis in a special oar on train No. 4. His office will be at the depot on Main street. Supt. Houlahan is one of the prominent railroad men who believe that the only safeguard against railroad accidents is matured judgment. Mr. Houlahan, in building his railroad career, has had the advantage of observation from many sources of advantage. Starting as a water boy, and working in every department of the operating end of a railroad, he has been in a position to follow events Mr. Houlahan has made the statement that no invent ion no matter how efficient, could take the place of a man with a cool head. Folio wing this line of thought, , he has also made the statement that he did not believe in the retirement of employes beca use of advanced age. He says it requires from 35 to 40 years to ripen some intellects to prefect judgment. The man of 40 has generally teen tried by fi r e, and there fore, he avoids the flames. Like the general on the battlefield he knows what to do. Mr. Houlahan has written extensively on the subject and what he says is not theory, but practice.
