Give the railroad subsidy a goodsized boost The enterprise is worthy. The paternal form of government in our new possessions in Samoa does not suit the natives there. They held a convention of the chief citizens from all the islands at Tutulla and asked some very perti nent questions of the commandant. Especially why he should make the laws without consulting them and why they should not have a voice in expending the -axes collected. Taxaticn without representation is protested against by even the untutored savage, it seems. In the island of Mamin the cable informs us the condition was better; the natives aie building school houses and making roads without any desire for compensation. Those native, are on the high road to civilization and their children will live to see the day of either teing citizens of their own republic or represented in the congress of his one. — Sentinel Put it up in your home, any room will do. K. has been placed on the deal made by the city for the necessary machinery to inaugurate a day electric light current, and that the same would be shipped immediately. This is certainly the oil of joy, and comes just after a round of uncertainty that caused some dark angry swearing by the city officials. The Westinghouse people tried to ditch the contract, but this latest information that they have seen the error of their way, and will proceed to comply with their end of the contract. The officials think that should good luck be with them, the service will be ready for use not later than the first day of January, or about fifteen days hence. They will endeavor to put it into use as soon as such a thing is possible. The demand for the service seems to be unanimous, and hence the desire of the city officers to get action without delay. LONG DISTANCE Independent Telephone Companies Arranging for Service. Chicago, Deo. 15.—An effort will be made by the Interstate Independent Telephone aassociation to establish connections in Chicago. At today's meeting of the association a committee was appointed to call upon the officers of the Illinois Tunnel company to see what arrangements could be made with that company for use of its wires for long distance connections. The Independent lines desire the long distance connection with this city so that the association will be in better position to compete i with Bell telephone interests. . Some tima age the Illinois Tunnel ■ company expressed its willingness to comply with the a request of the interstate association for Chicago connections and promised to send a representative to the convention of .the independent com panies now being held here. Upon the failure of this representative to attend today’s session it was decid - I ed to send a committee to the automatic telephone people, with ini structions to obtain a written agreement from them as to what they propose doing in the matter. The committee will call on the officials of the Tunnel company tomorrow, and after the conference will report to the convention.
