THE MOON AND THE MICE.' CuritniM Indian Legend Fxplaininff tlir WnninK of Lunn. A curious Indian legend was told to 1 some people in Omaha by a full blooded | Sioux who lives at Pine Ridge agency. | lie said the belief was that every time a new moon appeared it was a signal for all the mice in the country to gather themselves together in one soot. When they assembled they Did separated into sou« great armies. army went to the north, another to the south, a third to the east and a fourth tn the west. These armies of mice traveled until they reached the po’nt where front the place of starting the heavens seemed to touch the earth. Then they climbed up the sky until they came to the moon, which by this time was what we caß full. All of the four armies then commenced nibbling at Luna, and when they bad eaten her all up the mice would scamper back down the lienvetM to the earth and w alt for her to show herself again, when the journey nnd the nibbling would be repeated by the mice, and this is what the Indians of early days believed was the eanse of the moon growing old and finally dtaaj>Chnirlw. THE CASPIAN SEA. One of the Remnrkable Physical Feat tires of the Globe. One of the most remarkable physical I features of the* giobe is the deep and wide depression in the nollow of which stands the Caspian sea and near to it the sea of Aral. The Caspian is m arly as large as France, and its surface is eighty four feet below the level of the Black sea. The sea if Aral is nearly as large ns Ireland nnd is verv little over 'be sea level. Within recent geological times *he vast expanse in which ' these lakes are found was sea. Its floor has been gradually raised, and the waters filling the depressions are ad that is left of an ancient Mediterranean. A strange feature of both bodies of water is that although they receive large rivers, especially the Caspian. Into which the Volga, the Ural river and. scores of streams from the Caucasus flow, both have for many years been getting shallower. Evaporation, for they have no outlet, exceeds the inflow. But, for some climatic reason probably, the sea of Aral and Its neighbor, Lake Balkhash, have since 18M been increasing in depth. Whereas the Caspian, like the Dead sea. is very salt, owing to the rate of evaporation, Aral and Balkhash are brackish only. These remnants of what was onrv a great sea opening into the ocean, as the Mediterranean does now, still contain marine fish and seals. Some of the latter survive in the Aral and Bal kal lakes, having gradually become fitted for their habitat, though it is uo longer salt, but merely brackish, and, In rtie case of Baikal, actually treat water.—London Telegraph.
