Mr Spencer Trask, head of the h!g New York banking houae bearing bin name and who supported Mr. McKinley in the two previous presidential election*, announces that he will support Judge Parker in the present -tm palgn Repudiating Roosevelt and advocating ’he election of Judge Parker to the presidency. Henry R Wolcott, of Gnlorado, informed his friend* that tne business interest* of the west demanded the defeat of the Republican ns tional ticket Mr Wolcott is a brother of ex-Gnlted States Senator Edward O Wolcott, of Colorado, and has even a larger Republican following in his ■fate than bas the ex-senator.
“Scrupulously Fulfilled." Mr Roosevelt says: “in 1898 the Republican party came into power, and In 1900 it retained power on certain definite pledge*, each of which waa tcruplously fulfilled.” If anyone doubt* that this is an unwarranted boast, let him read the Republican national platforms for 189 S and 1900 Among ths “deficits pledges” In the 1896 platform were the promise of reciprocity; the promise to promote the free coinage of silver by international agreement; tbe promise to rrve veterans of tbe Colon armies preference in tbe matter of appointments to office; tbe promise to honestly enforce tbe civil service law; the promise to create a national board of arbitration; the promise to admit the territories to statehood; the promise to give Alaska representation in con grees Not 00 . O s these pledges has been fulfill id. Conspicu-xis among the ■’definite piedsp." in the Rpp ibilcan plats. rm for 1900 was the promise that the party would restrain and prevent al! con spiracle* and combinations Intends! to restrict business, to create monopolies and 'o limit product n or to con frol prices Anoth-- “defln’ts n!«dg»” was to trsintain “the associated policy of reciprocity." Another "definite pledge r ‘iated to the enforcement of the civil service law Another >f|. mte n'.’-ri- re)s»-d to the ndmles-on to statehood of the territories .Not one of those "definite pledges" has been fulfilled Senator Gannon's sharp and Inetetve retort on Secretary Taft's speech about President Roosevelt’s conservatism is going the rounds of the press He said: "It was uttered pure | y for publication and not as a guarantee of good faith."
