PARKER of New York. For 5 ’lce-President HENRY G. DAVIS of West Virginia The Hou. Greene Smith as presidingjofficer of the democratic state con vention, did himself proud. He is a commanding figure, a parliamentarian of high rank, and a public speaker whose sarcasm and wit completely harmonize and make him master over any delegate hotly. His introduction of the speakers was always of the kind that captivates. He is a great fellow and his already long political life of usefulness and honor is by no means ended. The Taggart reception was what the boys t, rm a corker. With five thousand shouting democrats in the line of march and three times as m any more packed like sardines along the thoroughfares, it would seem that the date of demise of the democratic party had been indefinitely postponed. Not one third of the anxious multitude could gain admission to Tomlinson's hall - the scene of festivities. It was a great event in the historv of the party, and one that Mr Taggart may long remember with pleasure and pride.
The next thing in order is to get down to the sober and practical features of the coming campaign the election of the candidates nominated. This is what counts. Following the tuotto of our nations' cl .rtnan, the way to win an election is to get the votes, and the way to get t o votes is to get them. Adams couutv has a proud record in every state and national contest, and that record alone is sufficient to appeal to every democrat to support the ticket and to use his best endeavors to induce his neighbors to go and do likewise. There is much to strive for in this campaign, and the election of Judge Parker is essential to the business future of this great country. Every voter is interested, so get ready to take up the battle cry and the banner of democracy on to victory. ——— The platform adopted and candi dates nominated bv the democratic state convention is but a continued chapter of that political sanity that is so prevalent in the historic year of 1904. Hon. John Worth Kern, who heads the ticket, is the most popular and best known Indiana democrat, and an orator of high rank. Warder W. Stevens is a fanner and also popular. Edward J. Fogartv represents the labor element Capt. D. F. Allen I is a soldier of three wars. Joseph H Scm i« a leading lawyer. Walter S.'

Chambers is the publisher of one of the state’s leading newspapers, and so on through the list, every candidate a host of strength within himself. The convention was one of the most en thusiastie held in years, and a sentiment prevailed that this was the year to win. Get ready for the lire works VAST NESS OF RUSSIA. The Great Sire of the Empire la Not Generally Recognised. Few persons realize how vast is the area of the Russian empire. Into that enormous country you could put all of nou-Ru>sian Europe and yet only take Up h little more than one-eighth of the czar’s domains. Then you could add the United States, including Alaska, and still have almost enough territory left to place Canada in. In fact, the Russian empire comprises one-seventh es the land surface of the globe. Though uot comparable in extent of territory with the empire of the czar, the Vnited States seems of enormous area when compared with the European countries other than Russia. The state of Texas alone would take in Germany. Greece. Holland and Switzerland and siiil have room to spare. Belgium would simply lie lost in the Maine woods. In fact, you could put two Belgiu: s into the siate of Maine 1 and have a state left ’as large as New ■ Jersey. France could be stowed away up in Montana and Wyoming, with enough ; territory left over to take in Portugal. Sweden would tit into California, with i lots of room to spare, and Spain would I almost, but uot quite, tit into Nevada i and Idaho. To make Spain comfortable, we should have to borrow 4,iXa) square ■ mil s from Arizona, but that would ; still leave Arizona enough territory to I take in Italy, leaving out Sardinia. As for the British isles, we could ! stow tl.etu away in New Mexico and i have land to spare afterward. The I dual empire of Austria-Hungary would j l»e a more ditiieult matter to deal with. I and in order to give it elbow room we j should have to devote the states of , Colorado and Oregon to it and then ! borrow 4.‘t.<’ > si square miles from Wash- i ington, which would still leave Wash- j ingtou room in which to put the king- j dom of Servia and have enough left , over for a fair sized state. The kingdom of Rouinania could be placed in Arkansas, with about 5.000 ! square miles to spare. and Bulgaria would have more than enough room in Oklahem > Turkey’s pos< ssions in Europe are i about as large as Missouri, and Nor- ‘ wsr (mplil in fhp two D.-h i

The pirtt s left over from the various states and territ vies mentioned would be more than enough to make an ansa as large as Denmark and the other odds and ends of non-Russian Europe not menu. i<sl. But if v.c did u t want to spare so much terr , ’ory of the w stern states and territories. we could ecu;: nnize by plaeimr Germany. France. Italy and Belgium up ia Alaska, and the British isles could be distributed among the Philippines.
