The supreme court rendered an important decision yesterday, in declar ing unconstitutional the law extending the term of certain county officers. The decision is one that effects nearly every county in the state in some way. __________ Jim Goodrich the g. o. p. state chairman is mad. He is mad because Senator Fairbanks was nominated for vice president and the cause of his wrath comes from the I fact that Indiana with a candidate ; can not hope to demand so much , in campaign funds. This is state- I manship with the g. o. p. bra nd blown in the bottle. The efforts of the g. o. p. national convention to inject a little life and excitement over the nomination of Presidentßoosevelt wasa signal failure The nomination was made, and it was as spectacular as it was possible to make it, but still it lacked the life j that such occasions give to the nomi- 1 nation of a candidate for president. . The real meaning of this listlessness J is already causing the managers of , the Roosevelt ship of state large chunks of missgivings. Indiana has again been honored by a national convention by the naming of Senator Fairbanks for vice president. The senior senator ' played a good game of politcs and hopes to invade the next national convention as an aspirant for the presidency. All this ambition is worthy of the honest efforts of the genial statesman who played the game. This year however we hope that other plans will materialize and that democrats and the demo-

Judge Smith yesterday fieard ,' arguments on the motion for a new trial for Charles Dunn, who stands for the second time convicted of the murder of Alice Cothrell. Arguments in support of the motion were made by Attorney’ Henry Colerick and S. L. Morris and Judge S. M. Hench and Attorney E. V. Emerick appearing for the state, spoke in opposition. The arguments were not concluded until after 5 o’clock and Judge Smith announced that if possible he would come here Saturday to announce his decision, but he may not tie able to come. In that case there will be no decision on the motion until the September term as the circuit court adjourns Saturday afternoon.—Ft. Wayne Journal ■ Gazette.
