A LONo RUN An Engineer Handles One Engine Near* ly Five Thousand Mlles. On the recent trip of George Gold to Ogden and back it was remarkabie and unprecedented that one engineer handled one engine for the trip of over 4,500 miles. Mr. Gold decided to use a Texas Pacific engine and 264, one of the types Used on the regular passenger trains of this road, was selected, and the engineer chosen was E. J. Hadlxtk, who had already had a record of having covered 864 miles from El Paso to Texarkana without leaving his engine, that having been made with the Grafton excursion some four or five years ago. More remarkable than anything else is the fact that an exceptionally fast schedule which had been prepared for the'special was lived upto. The average running time of the train was sixty miles an hour, while in many instances eighty miles an hour was the speed reached. Throughout the entire trip po repairs were necessary to the engine, which is remarkable when one takes into consideration that all classes of fuel and qualities of water were sued. One run from Han Francisco to Odgen. a distance of #B7 miles, was without a single stop, except, for coal and water. Both Mr. Hadlock and his fireman. A. E Walker, were highly complimented by Mr. Gold for the pheI nomenal handling of the engine.

WHAT’S THE REASON Oil Men Cannot Understand the Drop in Prices. The late decline in the price of crude oil still remains a mystery to the trade in general. Some are of the opinion tliat the drop is due .to the supply of an inferior grade 1 I of oil found in Texas and California. , There are more than 96,000,000 bar- ’ rels of heavy oil in Kern County, | California, alone, and close to a milion and a half barrels on the Bastson, Texas field. The last named field during the past week has met with the worst kind of reverses. First the big gushers have now turned to salt water, and following that comes a big fire in the pool, which destroyed at least a million dollars worth of oil, tanks, rigs and other material in the oil field. The boomers will have to look up another field in Teaxs, and the chances are as though a pool of gushers should be found at most
any locality within the borders of that state. The duty output of the new Kansas field in less than eleven thousand barrels a day, and in the older Trenton limestone fields the operators are unable to increase the daily output to any extent, borne very fine wells are being found among the hills of West Virginia, and there is a great amount of new work under way in Kentucky, but just now the Muncie and Parker City districts, in Indiana are furnishing the wells that attract the attention of oil men from far and wide. In the Canadian fields there is a shortage in production, as the drill in Ontario all is to find surticent crude to meet the demands and the product must be secured from the oil fields of the United States.
