Abe Simmons of Bluffton, is being urged by his friends to accept the h< nor of being' a delegate to the democratic national oonven- ; tion at St. Louis. Such a selection would show the sober good sense the democratic party is now laboring under. Mr. Simmons besides being a good lawyer, is that kind of a democrat that mixes conservative judgment in his politics. z The republican state committee met at Indianapolis and set April 22 and as the date of their state convention. Hon. James E. Watson was selected as permanent chairman, and is expoeted to sound a real and genuine keynote for consumption during the campaign. Keaolutioi of indorsement were also given President Roosevelt. In Adams county the apportionment of delegates gives them seven.

Indianapolis. March s.—The official paper of the mine workers, in today s issue puts to rest the rumor that President Mitchell expects to resign. It says: "The quid mines have "resigned'’ President Mitchell once more. It is not necessary to enter a denial to all the idle rumors, but this the Journal can state authoritatively: ( Mr. Mitchell has not resigned, is not going to resign. ■ 't v.'ould not be permitted so resign de has not been I offered nor would accept any political office, needs none, wants none and will take none.” It was stated a few days ago that President Mitchell was to become the head of the bureau of statistics succeeding Carrol I). Wright. Some credence was given this report as it is known generally that President Roosevelt and President Mitchell are close friends. The adoption of a resolution by the Republican state committee Indorsing tha administration of President Roosevelt and expressing the wish that the delegates from this state be instructed to vote for his nomination has put to flight the silly rumors that the committeemen were hopeful that he bB Be,ert «<> to head the ticket. The Indorsement was In clear and unequivocal terms. “He has fulfined the highest expectations of his friends and has justlfled the confidence reposed In him by the nation ” is the way the resolution read. While disclaiming any desire to dictate, the committee, in the interest of party harmony and success, advised that all Indiana delegates be instructed to vote for ulm at the Chicago convention. The resolutions are In line with those adopted at a recent m -ting of the New York state committee and are of especial interest because of the widespread talk that has gone the rounds to the effect that Indiana R»

A dispatch from Geneva says: While the drillers were pulling a joint of drivepipe into the derrick on the Wes. Watson farm seven miles southeast of here. Thursday morning, the large bolt came out of the drivehead, letting the ropislip off and dropping the pipe. Chas. Ball, who was at work in the rig. saw the rope falling but | before the could get away it struck him on the left side of the head, knocking him over the water tub and under the tug rope, cutting his head open on the left side, and tearing his right ear nearly off and dislocating his right shoulder, besides numerous other bruises more or less serious. He is also probably injured internally. He was brought to his home in this place as soon as possible, and Dr J. T. Miles is in attendance. Mr. Ball is in a very serious condition and it will; j be some time before he will be able I to work again. A Word of Advice. A father talking to his care- I less daughter said: “I want to speak to you of yonr mother. It maybe that you have noticed a I careworn look upon her face lately. Os coruse it has not been brought there by any action of yours still it is your duty to chase it away. I want you to get up tomorrow morning and get the breakfast and when your mother comes and begins to express her surpi ise go right up to her and kiss her. you can t imagine how it will brighten herj dear face. Besides you owe her a kiss ortwo. Way back when you a little girl she kissed you when no one else was tempted by yonr fever tainted breath and swollen face. Yon were not as attractive then as you are now. And through those days of childish sunshine and shadow she was always ready to cure by the magic of a mother’s kiss the | little dirty, chubby hands when
publicans would try to defeat President Roosevelt In the convention. W E. Springer of Elizabethtown, Fourth district member of the Republican state committee, took a decided stand in favor of not holding the state convention before the middle of May. I He took his position in behalf of Hugh Th. Miller of Columbus who lately entered the race for lieutenant governor and who, it is understood, wants more time in which to complete his canvass. Springer says that Anderson Piercyfield of Nashville will be the Republican nominee in the Fourth for congress. He is a fine campaigner and Springer says will make a great race in face of tne big Democratic majority he will have to confront Piercyfield, however, is not at all dismayed and has informed Springer that he will be able to carry Brown county which is noted for its rockribbed Democratic majority of between 600 and 700. The congressional convention will not be held until after the Democrats make their nomination.
Senator C. C. Lyons of Fairmount who is to be chairman of the speakers’ bureau of the Republican state committee was here today. He will come here next week to begin work with Chairman Goodrich and Secretary Sims. Lyons is very confident that Major Steele is going to be nominated for congress but he says that Con- ? red I ’ an,ll> 18 making a Aden? n? j ever they were injured in those skirmishes with the rough world And then the midnight kiss wit! ; which she routed so many bad dreams as she leaned over your restless pillow, have been on inter ; est these long, long years. O1 | course she is not so pretty and kiss able as you are. but if you had done your share of the work during the last ten years the contrast would not be so marked. Her face has more wrinkles than yours, far more and yet if you was sick, that face’ would be more beautiful than an angel’s as it hovered over you watching every opportunity to min ister to yonr comfort. and every one of those wrinkles would seem to be bright wavelets of sunshine' chasing each other over the dear face. She will leave you one of these days. These burdens if not lifted from her shoulders will break her down. Those rough, hard hands that have done so many necessary things for you will be crossed upon her lifeless breast. Those neglected lips that gave you our first baby kicss will be forever closed and those sad. tired eyes will have opened in eternity and then you will appreciate your mother, but it will be too late.” BANK STATEMENT
