NFWS FROM THE STATE CAPITAL
Indianapolis. March 1. —Joseph T Fanning, grand exalted ruler of the Elks has. returned from a three weeks' visit to New York where he was a guest of honor at a big banquet given by Members of his order. He paid considerable attention to the political conditions in the East. In New York, be says, there is still a lot of talk of Cleveland for president but it is his opinion that the predominating sentiment is for Judge Alton B. Parker. Some of the Tammany leaders are talking of Cleveland but Mr. Fanning belie*es that eventually the New York delegation will settle upon Parker, in that case, he said, that it is very probable that Parker will get the nomination. In this connection It may be stated after a careful investigation that there is a rapidly growing sentiment in this state for Parker and it will not be surprising if he should receive the vote of Indiana The election of Colonel Harry B Smith as chairman of the Marion coun ty Republican commite emphasizes the opinion advanced after the defeat of the city ticket here last fall that ths word "Ilnale" had been written for the Bookwalter machine. The latter made a gallant fight to elect Sheriff Robert Metzger but he was defeated by a narrow margin. The significant fcmture. however, is that a candidate t*a<*ta**<l by th* anti maf-hlns foro«»* •hould have won. It is generally conceded that the result means an entirely new deal In local Republican politics. The rule of the Bookwalter machine, it may be stated at this time, was much shorter than that of the average political machine. it came quick and was quickly finished for it had not been in existence more than eight years. However, In that time It dictated with an iron hand The election of Colonel Smith probably means the renomination of Congressman Overstreet without opposition and the nomination of men for countv offl-

FAILS TO IMPROVE Terrell Refuses to Eat and Grows Weaker Each Day, Sheriff Johonston stated this morning that the condition of John W. Terrell showed no signs of improvement. Terrell steadfastly refuses to partake of any refreshments and is growing thinner and weaker day by day. Unless he soon begins to partake of some solid food he will certainly die frotr. exhaustion. All that he eats at the present time lias to be placed in his month by his attendant. He has not spoken a dozen intelligent words since being placed in jail : after the last session of court to I hear the argument for a new trial. —Bluffton Banner.
ces who are not under the control of the old machine. Captain D. F. Allen of Frankfort was here toady on business. He is one of the leading Democrats of Indiana and is frequently mentioned for a place on the state ticket this time. His presence here caused a revival of the gossips as to the makeup of the ticket. If he will accept he will probably be nominated for secretary of state. He was frequently mentioned for that place two years ago but he did not become a candidate. There is considerable talk of Wm O'Keefe, treasurer of Marshall county, for state treasurer. He is the treasurer who agreed to turn over to the county all of the earnings of the county funds. Democrats in his section believe he would be a strong man for the state ticket. John B. Stoll of South Bend, the veteran editor, is now enjoying a wide mention for the nomination for governor. The party leaders are confident they will get out a strong ticket even though the field is not bubbling over with material now. The Indorsement of the candidacy of J. Frank Hanly of Lafayette for the Republican nomination for governor by Wa; rick county has formed the most, interesting bit of political gossip of the last ten days. Warrick county is the home of Congressman J. A. Hemenway and very naturally there is speculation among politician* as to whether or not this indorsement means that he la espousing the cause of Lafayette men Hetnonway la very popu-1 lar throughout his district and there 1* no doubt but that ne could have! prevented the Indorsement had he desired. The followers of Hanly are greatly elated as they feel that if Hemenway is not for them that he will not offer any opposition which is conHiderable In view of the recent reports that he expected to support W L. Taylor of this city.

A long stride toward solving the mystery of curing catarrh was taken with the discovery of 3vomei. In faci, the percentage of cures by this treatment proves it equal to the* final tests. The folly of taking medicine into the stomach to cure catarrh of the nose, throat and lungs, has been realized by physicians, but not until Hvomei was known, had they a practical method that would obviate stomach drugging. A complete Hvomei outfit costs but •51. and consists of a neat pocket inhaler that can be U9ed anywhere without attracting attention, a medicine dropper and a bottle of Hyomei. Breathing Hyomei through the inhaler. every particle of air that enters the nose, throat and lungs, is charged with a healing balsam that soothes and allays all irritation, kills the catarrhal germs and enriches the blood with additional ozone. The Holthouse Drug Co. have no much faith in the power of Hyomei to cure catarrh, that they are selling it uuder their personal guarantee to refund the money if it does not give positive relief.

ISITPEACEORWAR? Coal Miners and Mine Owners Again in Conference. Outlook for Agreement on Wage Scale Is Not Very Hopeful Just at Present Each Side Unwilling to Armlt That Trouble Will Come—Both Are Firm. Indianapolis. March 1. —The 350 accredited Indiana. Ohio, western Pennsylvania and Illinois operators and the 725 miners' delegates from all the twentv-flve districts of the United Mine Workers' organization, who met in Tomlinson hail yesterday morning, to take up again the question of the 1904 mining scale and contract, adjourned until this morning, after a half-hour's session, in which nothing was done. The miners were immediately called into extra national convention by President John Mitchell. Though the question of scale was not taken up yesterday morning, it is found that miners and operators have returned to Indianapolis determined to stand for their previous demands — the operators for the scale and working contract of 1900. which would carry a 12 to 15 per cent reduction in wages, and the miners for the readoption of the present scale The miners’ delegates, in fact, seem to stand more determinedly against any reduction than in the last Joint conference. The outlook for the prevention of a general strike involving four states and also In Michigan. lowa. Maryland. West Virginia. Kentucky. Central Pennsylvania and lowa, in which working contracts also expire on April 1, Is not very bright, though both sides profess to have strong hopes thst what might honestly be termed "the unexpected” will happen, and a contract for the four suites and basic scale for other districts will be a'dopted this week. Delegate* from the anthracite district No. 1 are Instructed to vote against any furtner concessions. Some who are thoroughly in touch with the sentiment, doubt that even the miners’ national officers could influence the 725 delegates to vote to accept a reduction.
