WILL EIGHT SMOOT. North Indiana Conference Work Against Senator. The North Indiana conference of the Methodist Episcopal church has begun a systematic fight against the seating of Reed Smoot, United States senator from Utah. Mrs. L. H. Runyan of Richmond, a member of the national organization of the Christian Woman’s Mis sionary society and the recording secretary of; organization in the North Indiana conference, has sent to ull missionary societies blank petitions asking the senate not to seat the Mormon senator. She is also urging the societies in each city and town of the conference to meet and take formal action by passing resolutions and urging citizens to sign the petitions which are to be forwarded to Washington as fast as prepared. NO INDICTMENTS. Marion County Grand Jury Says No One is Guilty. The Marion county grand jury have completed its investigation of the Purdue wreck. The blame for the wreck was placed on an alleged lack of system and lack of co-opera-tion in the railway company’s work and to an imperfect system of train handling. The rejiort says no good would come from the prosecution of any persons connected with the railroad, which action would be very expensive to the county. It is recommended that a law be pissed by the next legislature providing that a baggage car shall be placed between the engine and the first passenger coach, and that a derelic tion of duty shall be an offense that may charge a man with manslaughter. REMEMBERED HIM. Santa Claus Called on Our Monroe Agent. Santa Claus reports that he made at least one citizen of Monroe township happy on Christmas day and that person was Jonathan Burk head, hustling agent for the Democrat, whom he presented with fifteen Chester Wnite pigs, this fact being witnessed by J. N. Burkhead, J. B. Corson and Merle Essex. The gift is certainly appreciated by Uncle Jonathan who says he got just what he wanted and that's more than most people tan say. especially in Monroe where they sent in orders for everything including automobiles, beans, face ]K>wder and corn cob pipes. BREAK AGREEMENT. Erie will Issue Passes Over Entire System. The eastern pass agreement has lx-en somewhat shattered by Hie decision of the management of the Erie railroad to issue exchange passes good over the entire system. Official notice of this decision said to have been received bv the executive committee of the western pass agreement. The western lines will therefore receive passes for their representatives, which will lx- good in all the eastern territory of the Erie in exchange, will M-cnre similar favors for all of its traveling men in ull western territory. ARE GRATEFUL. Jurymtn in Osborne Cast Say Thev Were Treated Well. The members of the jury in the < >slx>rne muriler case have requested us to say that thev appreciated very highly the manner in which they were treated by everyone during the eleven days they served. WAS POLISHED. Rev. G. Hunter Myers Delivers a Polished Sermon. The Methodist chruoh was crowd ed last night to hear the Rev. G. Hunter Myers deliver one of his 1 characteristic and interesting sermons. He acquitted himself with a great deal of credit and and caused his many friends here to renew [ their faiHi in his ability as a pastor and pulpit orator. He was self po- ! sessed throughout, and gave evidence of being a great bible student, and of having a thorough knowledge and training in expressing bis thoughts and in making himself understood. Decatur is very proud of Rev. Myers. He is a young minister, but it can eas ly be seen that such abilty and polish will soon be recognized by the Bishop and others in charge of this conference district, and that soon he will be filling some of the best appointments. He has the gift and other attainments and with a few more years experience in the pulpit he is bound to shine with the best of them. He is now located at the Taylor University at Upland, where he is making a mark for himself in the ministry. SURPRISED FRIENDS. Gerry Martz Wedded to a Delaware County Lady. Gerry Martz, one of the best known young men of Monroe township has surprised his friends by the announcement of his marriage. He was united in the holy bonds to Miss Rosina Muhlin of near Daleville, Deleware county, Indiana on December 3. They ar rived at Monroe last Thursday, De ■ cember 24 and were given an elaborate reception at the home of the groom's father, George H. Martz. In tlie evening the happy couple were shown their popularity when a crowd of young people gave them an old fashioned serenade belling. They will reside in Monroe township and we wish them the best of everything for the future. PORTLAND DANCE. Elks to Give Bi£ New Year Ball.
