COTII HUD IW Missing "Peter’s Pe..ce ’ Had Been Held In Trust For Leo's Successor. Prefect of the Propaganda Had Been Pledged to Secrecy for Period of Four Months. This Period Having Expired. He Has l Turned Over the Sum of $9,000,000. Rome, Dec. 19. —The Vatican has just had sudden wealth poured into its coffers. For some time certain sums which were known to be possessed by Pope Leo were looked for without result, the search toward the end becom ing somewhat feverish. Cardinal Gotti, prefect of the propaganda, accompanied by Mgr. Marzolini, one of the late pope's secretaries, drove up to the Vatican yesterday and. getting out hurriedly, began tugging at a heavy object in the carriage. Assistance was offered, but it was refused, and Cardinal Gotti and Mgr. Marzolir.i between them carried the

mysterious object to the apartment of j Pope Pius. They were immediately I admitted and remained for two hours. I Intense curiosity was aroused by this act, as it was Le'ieved to have some : relation to the missing wealth, and i the wildest rumors were circulated. It soon became known, however, that th° • bag contained $9,000,000 in bank i notes. When Cardinal Gotti entered the presence of the pope he sank to his knees and. pointing to his burden said: ‘Your holiness, the lamented Leo. just before his death, confided to me the money which I now lay at you feet, saying that if I succeeded him I was to use it as I thought best, but that if another took his place. I was to turn the money over to him after a period of four months had elapsed. This I now do in the presence of Mgr Marzolini. who has been the only other person to share the secret.” The pope was much affected Just about the time this scene was enacted in the papal apartments an electrician, while removing the hang Ings in the late Popo Leo's chamber in order to get at the electric light wires, found in the hole in the wall several baes which were carelessly tlod. These bags when opened were found to contain $1 950.000. The alleged reason for Popo Leo’s course is that h° wished his successor to learn bow difficult it was to rule the church without money, thereby impressing on him the necessity for economy. SEASONABLE ACTIVITY Approaching Holidays Act as a Stimulus to T-ade. New York. Dec. 19. —Bradstreet's weekly review of trade today says: ! Holiday and retail business generally j is seasonably active, wholesale and i jobbing trade correspondingly quiet, I while manufacturing industry slackens partly for the above reasons, but also because of low water in streams or efforts to readjust operations to changed conditions of demand and supply. Cold weather is still an important stimulus to heavy wearing apparel and footwear. There are several continuously encouraging features noted. The car congestion of a year ago is conspicuously absent this year, and the railways are handling the current business offering with profitable results. Failures do not display more than the normal tendency to increase in number. and there is evidently less teuslon than exhibited a mon in ago. Toys of all kinds. Racket store. Louk! look! look!
