ENTERTAINED Grand Army Acts as Host. Treat the W. R. C. to a Square Meal and a Good Time. At adjournment of regular meeting of the W. R. C. last night about thirty old soldiers and husbands of the Releif Corps ladies, walked in on them, completely surprising the ladies present. T.he gentlemen also took charge of affairs, by promptly chartering a lady and escorting her to the Martin restaurant, where at nine o’clock an elegant luncheon was served. The event was skillfully planned by the < >l<l vets to even up a similar score played on them during the district oon vent ion held here in October last. An enjoyable time was had all around, the ladies acknowleging that the men were some account after all. These frequent social occasions are the best way to unite and keep intact that feeling of equality and good comradship, so necessary at this age, when people are apt to too soon forget the bonds that hold together our citizenship. After Smoot. Petitions asking that Senator Reed Smoot, from Utah, be ousted from his seat in the United States enate are being presented in a number of churches throuhgout the country for signature on Sunday, and in nearly every one they were signed by many voters in the congregations. The petitions ask that Smoot be unseated on the ground that he practices polygamy, and that, he recognizes the sovereignty of the Mormon church above that of the United States.

CHRISTMAS SERVICES. An Orchestra will be Installed at St. Marys Church. Especial services will be held in St. Marys Catholic church on Christ-. mas morning, from seven to ten 1 o’clock. Arrangements are under i way for an orchestra to accompany the regular church choir, thus as- i suring some especially fine music for the occasion. The services also will be interesting. That the church will be crowded with members of the congregation, as well as others, is a foregone conclusion. The orchestra mentioned will be under the leadership of Harvey Hart, an old hand at tho business of equipping musical turnouts. It is safe to say that there will bo no flies on the musical feature of tho Christmas services at this church. WILL SPRUCE UP. Horse Dealers Here Can Sell Bluffton a Team of Horses. The city council is anxious to buy two of the best horses in the county for a fire team and have set next Tuesday afternoon as the date when a team will he selected and purchased. In order to give all who deisre a chance to sell a team i the council has arranged to ha ve horses brought to the city on that | date and submitted to inspection at the Reinhard feed barn. The i council will inspect all of the horses brought to the barn and will purchase the team which will be kept constantly at the city building ready to be hitched to the fire wagon as soon us an alarm is turned in.— Bluffton News. A WHEAT TRADITION. A tradition is said to still exist among a few of the farmers of today,to the effect that in every tenth year ending with five the wheat crop is a failure, was said to have been the case in 1865 and every tenth year since then, and some people are predicting such conditions for 1905.
I A FINE PLAYER. Joe Hood Entertained the Commercial Club. Fancy Billiard and Trick Pool Playing Enjoyed Last Night. The exhibition of Joe Hood last evening at the Commercial Club rooms, was a revelation in billiard, fancy and trick pool playing. He is certainly a star in his line and can make the ivory balls do most anything but talk. His playing was remarkable and called forth applause frequently. His trick shots were simply great, as were his fifteen ball combination, his pocketing six balls, making the play blindfolded, as were also his endless number of other equally us difficult shots on the pool table. i Mr. Hood made good all he promisI cd, and we doubt not that he I ranks with the best of them in fancy and expert pool and billiard playing. Wo expect to sco some of the club players now excelling and making the efforts of Mr. Hood look like thirty cents. The club has never boasted of its brilliant players but the enthusiasm they put in- I to the social game can not be dis-' counted at any place at any time. Mr. Hood went to Fort Wayne this morning and will give the lovers of the game there an opportunity to see something good in the way of clever shots upon the green covered I table, with holes only at the end and side. Miss Jessie Magley went to Sal-1 ona, Penn., last evening where she | will visit for a few months with ' her cousin B. B. Uhl and family.
WELL ABANDONED. The Rnpright test oil well was abandoned and the tools moved to the Hall lease Wednesday. The showing was fair for oil but it was impossible to s>..ve the hole as the , drill got wedged in such away that ' progress was impossible. At first it was attempted to fill up the crevice causing trouble too but the attempt was in vain. The company is holding fast to every foot of leased land in that section and will test till spring.—Ossian News. IT WAS GOOD. Worthy Production by Miss Lenora Huffman. The Democrat Hopes to Later Produce it in Print. At a recent meeting of the Adams county teachers, Miss Lenora Huffman a teacher at Peterson this year, read a paper on “Teachres Equipments.” We have heard a great deal of favorable comment on the production, some of them even going so far as to declare it the best paper ever read before an audience upon a similar occasoion. Some time in the near future when holiday work and court news is not bearing down so strenuously upon ns, the Democrat will endeavor to publish | same complete. Surely it will prove beneficial to many and all those engaged in the profession of teaching. The subject would indicate that considerable latitude was covered by the speaker, and knowing her ability and success in i Adams county and elsewhere she | has a license to write upon any snbI ject in which tho public schools and i the teachers are interested. Miss. | Huffman is now enjoying tho holiday vacation at her home in HartI ford township.
