Complete election returns received only by the Daily Democrat, at this office tonight. When reading the editorial columns of the Decatur Democrat one might almost conclude that the “official paper of Adams county” has left its party —or has been deserted by its party and become the organ of the antiCromerites. Berne Witness. The Witness is unduly alarmed. | The Democrat is no deserter, and we | thank God for the fortitude of prinei-, j pie that enables us to be what we are at all seasons of the year—campaigns included. A CENSUS MAN. Mr. Wright is in the City Today to Secure Statistics. Mr. Cassius E. Wright representing the United States census office, Washington, D. C., is in the city and will be busy for several days. His duties are to secure a complete abstract of the recent appraisment of land and property in Adams county, including the valuation of all lands, city and county, also of the improvements thereon. It is certainly quite a job and when we consider the fact that this must be i done in every county in the United States we may begin to realize the enormity of the undertaking. How- i ever in due time it will all be done and congressmen will lx? sending copies on such a record complete to their constuents. NEW BARBER SHOP. Charles Kitson Will go Into the Business. Charles Kitson this morning purchased a full and complete line of barlxir supplies and will open up a shop here in about two weeks in the room now occupied by Frisinger & Company on North Second street. Charles is an old time barher and knows the work from a toz and after once open for the public’s inspection, you will see one of the finest shops that has ever been opened in our city. You need not be surprised if he solicits your patronage as he is a hustling young business man. A BOX SOCIAL. Will J. Miller, principlal of the Pleasant Mills schools asks us to announce that a box social will lie given at that place next Saturday evening, the proceeds to go for the benefit of the school library. A good program has been arranged and the event is sure to be a very pleasant one.

EAT A BISCUT. Schafer Hardware Co’s. Range Opening. Special Display of Malleables This Week—A Free Lunch Each Day.
I i The Schafer Hardware Company are holding open house this week introducing their famous Malleable Steele range and many people are each day taking advantage of the ' golden opportunity to sample bis- . cuits“like your mother used to ’ bake,” and a delicious cup of coffee. A representative of the factory is at the store and produces a pan of biscuits in three minutes with one half the fuel usually used. The range is a beauty and looks to be what is claimed for it the best on the market. The Schafer Company have already put out enough of 1 these stoves to guarantee them just as represented and this week promises to be the banner one for the sale of Malleables. As an announcement of the big sale they have a beautiful display window representing a kitchen fitted out with a Malleable and other neees-
sarys of that, the most important apartment in any house. BOLD ATTEMPT. Man, Supposed to be Burglar Frightened Girls. A supposed burglar made an unsccessful attempt to enter the home ' of Daniel Beery on Fifth street last evening between eight and nine 1 o’clock. Miss Marie Beery was at home and had as guests Misses Kittie Smith and Georgie Miller. They noticed the front door open slightly and all three rushed to close same ' but the harder they pushed te harder the fellow outside pushed. The man finally succeeded in getting ’ the door aliout half o]>en was preparing to enter when the girls with a loud scream gave up the battle and rushed out the rear door to the homo of a neighbor, where they remained until the family arrived home. A search of the house failed to disclose the Tact that anything was missing and leads to the beleif that it might have been a joke by some boys. It was pretty serious however and the girls don’t want it repeated.

COMMERCIAL CLl'B MEETING TONIGHT It is-earnestly requested that all members attend the regular monthly meeting tonight. Matters of importance are to be'brought before the club and are such as ought to have the earnest consideration of the entire body. French Quinn, President. Amusements. “Lincoln J. Carter's great scenic comedy “The Darkest Hour” which comes to the Bosse opera house tonight made most flattering impression last season its first year out and indications go to bear out the fact that it will remain many more years before the footlights until it is finally called of. There is nothing dar k or gloomy about
the play as one might naturally suggest but tells a sweet lovable romance in a forceful and interesting style and with much charm and petiteness. The plot is well laid and is much unlike the conventional lines on which most melo-dramas are built. The cast is said to be of efbeptional worth and play their respective parts with all the inthusiasm, intelligence and dramatic ’ conception that the most critical could desire. Lincoln J. Carter’s great scenic comedy “The Darkest Hour" will be seen at the Basse opera house Tuesday, Nov. 3. It is said to contain a story of intense heart interest relieved by many bright and witty spurts of laughable comedy. ’ The acting company has been carefully selected and includes many 1 well known faces. Wo are promis- ’ ed an abundance of handsome de- ’ vices. Several clever specialties are indulged in by the soubrette and 1 comedian of an ovel and artistic 1 character. On the whole this • piece should receive the attention of the patrons of manager Bosse's * cosy theatre. i P. W. Smith arrived fiom Fort Wayne today.
