WATERPROOF TENTS. i » I Don’t Miss Wallace’s BiiJ Shows Tomorrow. Most all circuses cailm to have I I water proof tents—canvas that will turn rain but the only very I largest ones can truthfully advertise ' to have them. There are times when water proof tents will not turn ; , rain yet they are thoroughly water proof. This may seem like a paradox but it is trus and is one of the several 1 peculiar circumstances and incidents ! of a circus manager's career that place him in bad plight us far as his integrity is concerned. Mr. B. E. Wallace, the sole owner of the high | , class circus bearing his name, al-! ways buys newc anvas for his horse , menagerie, circus and dressing room tents each year. This year the size of the various tents has I considerably increased owing to I the enlargement of the show. | These “tops’are carefully sewed, roped and ribbed by expert sail- ■ makers, after they have left the | tent factory, they are taken to the I winter quarters and spread out on the ground. It is when the tent tops are seen in this way that the size of a circus outfit can be ap i predated. This spring when the top of every tent with the Wallace ' show was being made water proof, I ' a small pasture of eight acres j was used. It was found too small and a larger was secured where the canvas could be spread without any trouble. Aafter the canvas is thoroughly dried by the sun, men walk back and forth over it. pouring a fluid called "parufine” upon it, which is later rubbed by brushes. This fluid is destructive of life and if it reaches grass or vegetation it is sure to kill it. It will turn water except under certain condij thins. If put up dry it is as good 'as the average roof, but if it is put i up in the rain, and is wet before it is stretched then it is sure to leak, ' and circus patrons will say the tent !is not water proof. The Great I I Wallace Show will h'here under its ' water proof tents on Saturday, August Ist.
