Adam Smith returned from Ft. i Wayne today. George Glendenning, of Geneva, I was a business visitor in the city to- ‘ day. Misses Charlotte and Ida Reinking returned from Fort Wayne this afternoon. Miss Jones, of Logansport, arrived here today for a visit with Mrs. Julia Colchin. H. S. Mishaw, of Berne, who was here on business, returned home this afternoon. Mrs. David Baker and mother, of illshire, were shopping in the city this afternoon. Miss Mina Case returned to Magley this morning. She attended the QuinnMerryman wedding yesterday. Mrs. John Iman, of Van Buren, arrived here today for a visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Baker. Jesse \\ atkins, of Pleasant Mills returned to Decatur this afternoon from a visit with his son at Ft. Wayne. Miss Sawyer and Mrs. Harry Deam of Bluffton, are here for a few davs visit with the latters parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Allison. -Mrs. E. F. Miller, who has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs Joseph Miller left for her home at Oak Grove. Missouri. Mrs. Watkins and Misses Lucile and Marguerite Case, May Todd and May Reynolds went to Berne this morning where they will spend the dav visiting with friends. Henry Bosse, Sr., of Goshen, is here for a few days' visit with his relatives and host of friends in this city. Mr. Bosse will lie well remembered by Decatur people, having been employed for a long time at the Yager furniture store. Ada Barnett of St. Louis, whose exciting adventures in the recent flood were published in the Democrat. has written several letters here describing her experience. She will arrive in Decatur Saturday or Sundav. .
Motz Miller strayed away from home this afternoon and for a time it was feared he was lost. A Democrat reporter investigated the mat ! ter and traced him to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Krebre four and a half miles from this city. A large number of Masons from this city conferred Master Mason degree on four candidates at Willshire last | night. Among the initiative brethern were Gus Rosenthal, P. L. Andrews. Dore Moore. C. A. Dugan, Henry Heller. Isadora Cal ver Harry Friedman and M. Burns. Miss Jessie McLain, a popular clerk of the Boston store has the honor of donating the first book to the Commercial Club and her gift I is certainly appreciated by the asso- ! nation. If other citizens would be j as liberal the club could boast of a good library before long. Rev. C. G. Reynolds of Joliet Ills, and daughter are expected to arrive in this city sometime today from Blairstown, New Jersey, where Miss 11 1 Reynolds has just completed a four vears course at the Blairstown Acad- • emy. While in Decatur they will be the guests of Mrs. A.G.Hill and F.V, Mills and family. J. A. Kiess who lives on the A. A. As soon as one of their players who had been out o' town returned he was asked to play for less money anil decided to come home.
G. E. Brienier made u business trip to Fort Wayne this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Weber returned this afternoon from a week's visit at Fort Wayne. Miss Rose Smith left for Petoskey this morning where she will sjx>nd the summer with her sister. John Baker returned from Van Wert last night with a loud of fruit and candies for the Coffee & Baker restaurant. Miss Anna Zwick went to Fort M ayne yesterday afternoon where she will visit for several days with friends and relatives. Dr. H. E. Keller made a professional trip to Fort Wayne this morning. He will assist Dr. Deenen in an operation there. Mrs. J. A. Hendricks left for her home at Petoskey this morning. She has been here several weeks visiting J. W. Smith and family. Work on the Marshall street sewer is being pushed right through and the pipe is now laid as far as the intersection of Marshall and Fourth streets. D. H. Wolbert and wife, who have been visiting Mr. Wolbert's parents at Columbus, Ohio, returned to Fort Wayne this morning. They spent a few days with relatives and friends in this city. Rev. J. Wise, pastor of the First Evangelical church at Huntington. was greeting Decatur friends this morning. He had l»cn visiting his parents in Randolp county and stopped here on his way to Huntington. Miss Genevieve Hale went to Ft. Wayne last evening to attend the commencement exercises of the Ft. Wayne High School. While at that place she will be the guest of Miss Maud Whiteleather, who is one of the graduates. Mrs. Helen Daily and son. of Bluffton. who attended tjic Haefling-Vogle-wede nuptials yesterday, left for Fort Wayne this afternoon. Tomorrow evening Mrs. Dailey will attend the commencement exercises of the Sacred Heart Academy, in which her daughter takes a prominent part.
Rev. Frank Lankenau and family of New Orleans, are expected to arrive in this city about the first of July for a two months visit with Mr. Lankenau's parents Mr and Mrs. Henry Lankenau. Rev. Lankenau has charge of a church at New Orleans and has been very successful in his work at that place. Mrs. Fred Macke, cf Birmingham. Alabama, arrived in this city last evening for a few days visit with her parents and other relativesand friends. She was accompanied from Cincinnati by her father. R B. Allison, who went to that place to meet her. Mr. and Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Macke will shortly leave for Ogden. Michigan, to spend the summer at that famous resort. Mr. and Mrs. James Haefiing were given a lively farewell reception at the G. R. & I. railroad yesterday atfernoon, when they left on the their wedding tour. They were pelted with rice, old shoes, and other articles necessary to make their married life happy, according to the old adage, appropriate h'and bills were passed through the train and the couple otherwise made as comfortable as possible . Quite a crowd of friends participated in the affair.
Prof. E. B. Smith and wife of laifayette, arrived in the city this morning on x few weeks visit with •the former's parents, R. E. Siinth and wife of near Monroe. Edis an Adams county pr<xluction. one of which her citizens are proud, as hi l now holds a responsible position ns instructor at the Purdue University, having signed for another year in that institution. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are prominent young people and are well known in the south ]xirt of the county and in this city as well. They will return to Lafayette some time in August. According to the present specifications for the improving of Monroe street, the pavement is to lx- fortyfeet wide from curb to curb and to a number of property holders this seems an unecessury width. At the same time there are thoae who desire the thoroughfare to lx- the full width. One property holder said that he considered it the better plan to have a forty foot pavement for with an electric railway a smaller one wouil lie an inconvenience. Besides the same curb would answer, he said, and the additional cost only ♦19.<10, would not justify the unavoidable inconvenience.
J. W. Miebers will attend the Chicago Derby Saturday. Isaac Wheeler and wife, of Geneva, were visitors in the eity today. Mrs. Woodruff returned yesterday from a visit with relatives at Geneva. Miss Margaret Mann arrived from Muncie today and will be the guest of of Miss Jessie Winnes for a few days. Mrs. W. H. Sarff. of Ridgeville, passed through this city today on her way home from Bluffton where she has been visiting. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Ellingham are at Fort Wayne attending the midsummer meeting of the Democratic Editorial Association, which is in session there today and tomorrow. I left a copy of the prospectus of the life of Pope Leo XIII somewhere one day last week and have forgotten where. Will the party having it please return to me or leave it at the Democrat office. E. G. Coverdale. Tonight is the time set for the informal dance at the Columbian club, which promises to be a very pleasurable event. Electric fans have been provided and all details will arranged so as to make the place as comfortable as possible. Homer W. Kirschbaum, thirteen month old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kirschbaum, residing in the south part of Washington township, died last night after a few days illness with bowel trouble. The funeral services will be held at Monrue tomorrow. L. C. Perrine and wife were in the eity today enroute from New York to Quebec. They will be followed in a few days by a delegation of friends who will meet them at Quebec. Points of interest in the various cities on the way are visited, and from observations here, Mr. Perrine foretold a brilliant future for Decatur. •
Daniel Sprang and wife and Mrs. Vail constitute a party the advance guard of the Decatur delegation, which left for Oden, Michigan, this morning. They will remain during the summer returning some time in Septemlx-r. Oden is ever increasing in popularly here as a summer resort, and Decatur will again be well represented there. An enjoyable dance was given at the C. Y. M. S. club rooms last evening and a gixxl many couples were present. True Fristoe furn- • ished the piano music and the tune which he set waltz after waltz was indulged in. Although entirely informal it was a most pleasurable event and strengthens the record, long liefore established, of the C. Y. M. 8. boys as royal entertainers. Miss Pilliod of Grand Rapids, Ohio, was the only out of town guest present Miss Minnie Orvis is entertaining seventeen young lady guests this afternoon at her home on Winchester street. The event is a thimble porch party and in honor of Miss Anna Carlisle of Cincinnati. The lady who best proves her skill bymaking the prettiest scallop will recieve a prize. An elaborate two course luncheon will lx* served and . the occasion is certainly- one of the most delightful of the June six-iety 1 events. The home is beautifully j decorated with pink roses and | honeysuckles. The June meeting of the Homemakers Association of this part of | Indiana will hi- held at the ojx-ra : house in Huntington Saturday, June 27. An appropriate program has Ix-en arranged and those who will participate is Mrs. IdaM. Hartzell of this city whose subject is; “Topics of interest- concerning the J farm home." Others who are on' the program are Mrs. Naomi De-1 Vilbiss. and Alexander" Johnson of Fort Wayne. Mrs. J. A. Walker and Mrs. Summers of Huntington, and Mrs. Seherschel. Laro, Indiana. . Quite a number from this county I will attend. I would like to offer a proposition. ! This Commercial Club has an a bun-1 dance of push, and while they are Insisting other things why- not Ixxist a band. We hav? an abundance of goixi material in our city, why not utilize it, and make a good band? The town is obliged to go from home for music and get a stale quality at that. This method would make many cheerful hearts summer evening- with concerts. 1 would suggest to find a gixxl man as director then appoint two trustees to hx>k after all business matters and in two months time we can have a band second to nolxxlv.
