Indianapolis April 10.—It begins to look as if th* Bookwaiter mat. bine crowd is going to be between the "devd and the deep blue sea" in the coming crty campaign :f the coaserva tire voters may be ciaaaed either as the devil or the deep rea It has b**n a mat'«-r of comment here for the »,• year that the ma bine crowd was strong with the liberal element la fact, this ha been »o apparent that the conservative element has kept a trifle shy of the crowd. But a short time ago orders went out to close up the gamming joints, and they ha. > been closed as tight as a drum. It can be stated on reliable authority that there is less gambling in Indianapolis than there tar been for several years. The gamblers and sure thing men are standing around the saloons with Jong
faces They didn't expect such treatwent at this stage of the political game On the other hand, they expected ’o be allowed a free and easy time, and in return It Is understood they expected to contribute liberally to the Republican campaign fund. Home people profess to believe that Mayor Book waiter can't win without the liberal element at his back, but unless the reins are loosened be is not going to have the liberal crowd. II they are not for him they will be against him and if he lets them gc the conservatives will be hot on his trail, so there you are It Is a condl Uon out of which the Repubii> ans are not getting much satisfaction. Berry Newby of Knightstown has ju-X returned from San Francisco, where he went a month ago to arrange

J. C. Leach of Kokomo, former state gas Inspector, who was here today, says the supply of natural gas has dwindled away until there is not enough left in many places for domes tic purposes. However, he does not take a doleful view of the future of the gas belt. On the contrary he says that Kokomo Is enjoying a bigger boom than ever before The big substantial factories are being equipped with furna'es for coal, so that not many of the industries will be lost. Adi Alexander of .Marlon, who was here today, had the same story to tell about his town. It is enjoying another great growth, although the day of factory gas fuel Is about over. He estl < mated that 1,600 new houses will be erected at Marion this season. I
