Electrical transformers were burned out at the northwest corner of the square anti at the corner of Vine anil Washington streets Tuesday afternoon, causing the crossarms of the poles on which the transformers were located to blaze after the manner of tlsinlieuux in the gas towns. The plant wasimni Hliately notified by telephone ami the generators were stopped until repairs could he made. Burial of the Late H. C. Osborn. The remains of Henry Clay Oshorn were brought to this city this forenoon from Indianapolis. Mr. Osborn was born and raised in Clayton and moved from that place to Indianapolis, which has since been bis home. For uino years be was secretary of the Meritlian Lodge of the Odd Fellows at Indianapolis ami was also a member of the Masons. For the last three years be has suffered from softening of the brain. One month ago be went to Oxford, Ohio, for treatment in the sanitarium. It was at that place bis death occurred on Saturday evening. Funeral services were held over his remains at Indianapolis Tuesday evening. Otid Fellows and Masons to the number of fifty, and a number of friends accompanied the remains to this tit}’. The interment occurred at Forest HIU immediately after the arrival ot the funeral party, Elder Morris, the Odd Fellows and Masons olliciating. Mr. Osbo'n was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Eads of this city and also leaves a wife and two daughters.

A large audience assembled this morning in Meharry hall to attend the opening exercises of the university (or the college year of’97’98. On account of the train be-' ing late on which Gov. Mount was to arrive the exercises did not com mence promptly at eleven hut the yells and songs of the students kept the audience iu good humor for the time being. The program as given in this column yesterday ; was closely adhered to. The Mandolin club rendered La lipica in a most pleasing manner, after which a quartet composed of Messrs, i Howe, Burlingame, Starr and G'l bert sang Schubert’s Serenade, j The audience next joined in singing the DePauw song, following which Dr. Gobin introduced Gov. Mount, who in a short but well appointed speech told of his great interest in the young people of the state and especially in those who j were struggling for a higher education. His advice to the students who were just entering on their college course was wholesome and i fatherly. Miss Dietrickson, who has superseded Miss Fernie as teacher of voice culture in the
