A LESSON FOR AMERICANS. Ii»iilg;n«nt Londoner** Show Them How

Every morning at 9:21 a train from Wimbledon etops at Stre&tham 10 take up a strong contingent of stock brokers. which party it is timed to deliver in good condition at Ixtndou bridge at 9:43, in order that ■■bulls" and "bears" alike may !e safely eas onced in their respective stat'ons be.ore the clock strikes 10, sa's the London Daily Mall. Earlier trait: - have alreuty carried off hordes of ci.y clerks, "busiiie.young ladies" and a sprinkling of prosperous merchants of the early-rising persuasion; later ones are provided to.the sluggard journalist and tne company director. The 9 21 Is the stock brokers' train and is treated by tuem In quite a proprietorial way. A few days ago the 9:30 sun shone brightly down on the up platform, upon which some sixty stalwart stock brokers displayed every variety of city-made clo hes, while awaiting the arrival of their overdue train. There was no fog. and the distance from the Wimbledon terminus Is hardly worth mentioning. Whence, then, could the delay arise? These questions agitated every mind during the Intervals of perusing such items of news from East or the Cape as might, perchance, affect the subsequent doings on ’change. Presently a passenger happened to remark, genially, to a reporter. "Train very late this morning,” and received the astonish-
ing reply; “Train’s hoff, sir."
“Off?” A dozen pairs of ears had caught the reply, a dozen mouths repeated It. "Off? Where's the station master?” With the promptitude that characterizes their race, sixty shouting stock brokers swarmed Into the station master's office. For answer to their clamorous questions the official representative of the L. B. & S. C. railway company explained that, as the train had not gone down to Wimbledon that morning he was afraid it would not come back. Capel Court promptly rejected this logii- as being of a spurious type and as promptly presented an ultimatum. it took the form of ordering the station roaster to stop the expres.from Mitcham at 9:32. He refused to do so. and siince a pacific blockade was already in force without effect other pressure was employed. Threats of claiming compensation, demand for the return of their money, fell unheeded upon the official ear. Pale-faced he met the ultimatum, fortified by the example of little Greece, with a sturdy nonpossumus. Then a voice from the back of the crowd proposed in distinct terms that Mr. Station Master should be dragged on to the platform and puhli. - ly denuded of his nether garnicn: Wild legends of similar doings in the house had evidently reached the static:: master's ear. lie capitulated at discretion. He wired to Mitcham, the express pulled up and the Mitchamite who condemn the Streathamltes athese latter despise the Tulse-hillers were too much taken by surprise to make any effective resistance by barricading the carriage doors, to tt boarding of their private train by sixt; triumphant stock brokers, flushed wi !i their victory over the L. B. & S. C. rail way. The 9:21 up service was resume'I without explanation on (he followin :
day and is still running.

The Dutch settled this part of tht world about the same time Uiar they founded colonn s along the Hudson river, say the middle of the seventeen!)! century. When they built a house they meant that It should last nut riicn i} their lifetime, but that of genet allot, unborn. They planted trees in Ion;: straight avenues, which are still tht pride of the colony, and they built their bridges and highways with the obvious intention ot making title neighborhood another Holland. Mr. Cecil Rhodes has shown his appreciation for Dutch taste by purchasing for his home one of the finest, ancestral estates in the colony, where he lives when he sojourns at the cape, very much as might have done a governor of the old Dutch East India company. Before the Jameson raid Mr. Rhodes enjoyed grent popularity among the Dutch Africanders, for he was always careiful to treat their national characteristics with respect, and he was credited with an honest Intention of making in South Africa a great AngloDutch United States, where each nation might forget the jealousies born of allegiance to different flags and all unite undet *1j» banner of Africa for the Africander.—Harjie-* .Magazine.
