S V. 1'. are placed on an invitation for a purpose and that purpose is to ascertain if the invited ones will attend, and that is the general acceptance of the term, but some by their thoughtlessness or delay oftentimes cause a hostess much anxiety and worry concerning her guests. Especially is this true in the case of patties where games are played and where an exact number of people are a necessity. An immediate answer would enable the hostess to till places of people unable to

accept the invitations.
