The llttlo street of “hljou resuloncos nenr the imrk" was pleas intlv full of yellow Hiinahine nml Muo window Iwixes. Half way down a cnrrltigo intensified the dry whiteness of the pavements and roads by Its Kleaming lilacluie's. The straight feat nml footman stood near the carriage door, with black and white legs scL'lly lies! d, and eyes gazing forward with the regulation vant of expression. Ho eon- | versed with 'he coachman in suhduod and wary tones. “ Pretty looking girl at No. 8,” Coachman rolled his eyes into the left corner of ids eye sockets and perceived at No. 8 a bright young face half veiled behind the draperies of the drawing room window. ‘'tsho’s just out,” remarked the footman. “ Hero comes t ho fellow who’s most gone on her. : ’ A gentleman walked alertly up to No. 8, unconscious of the scrutiny of thu liveried critics, saw I ae face at the w indow vanish suddenly and smiled to himself as ho rang the bell. Ho went up stairs, repeating audibly the little sentences of deftly hidden sweetness and wooing he had prepared to say to her. She was very young, of enticing shyness and variableness, yet he was almost sure she loved him. He meant tn utter his carefully arranged phrases cautiously, and if a propitious moment or mood appeared Pi make his proposal. The door was opened, he was announced. and went forward eagerly to greet—her sister and the lutest novelty in 5 o'uloek tea sets lie mumbled n disconcerted reply to the sister chaperon’s re marks and razed searohlngly about the room. Oh, f ir an eye of cathode ray power to see whi.her she had flown! “What a delightful day!” said the lady. “London sunshine is the finest in the world. It is so beautiful to see Itselloct on tho ordinary, everyday dimness and dullness. Like all j fine things its value is heightened by its : scarcity,” ‘ bis, fearfully hot. The sun is hlind- ! ing.” he o', rvod ah r ietedly. Hang tho j inn! What has she ran away for!' We/o | all tho-c blushes lied shy looks merely tho i result of timidity and self consciousness? j Did she dislike lii"i so much that his calls I wore more than sho could endure? Ho could swear lie saw her pretty face and shoulders at the window as ho came up the steps. ‘ Duo lump, please,” ho murmured. “Dili you enjoy yourself at Lady Cardby’s dance!' ” “As much ns a chaperon may,"answered the young dame, with an ancient a.r that sat how iteliingly upon tier coquottish fairness. "A sister lately‘hrought out’ is i a great responsibility. Ilcsidcs the ‘ buds’ detract from the 'blossoms.’ ” “You ore youthful enough to rank with the buds,” h"smiled, w ith a sudden gleam of sanity and gallantry. “Is Miss Maydey quite well; ” ‘ Very well, thank you. In fact, she Is a little too brisk and lively for my nerves sometimes. ” Th ally? Now, I thought her the quietest, demurest of little maids—if 1 may ho permitted to express any thought about so charming a young lady.” Ho spoke with an affected lightness that w as more intense than thegreutost earnest ness. Evidently the sister understood his ease. Sho turned her beautifully dressed head aside for an instant, and her mouth quivered with suppressed mirth. "Ah, that is her •society’manner, and will depart when sho has seen a season or two," she affirmed. "When we are alone, I assure you sho is the most provoking, leasing, laughing, mischievous child you could possible find. Sho lias no reverence for my dlgu'ty or my toilets. Yesterday she hurst in upon mo with the avowed inteution of ‘making mo giggle!' ” Ho was listening with attentive oars— tho ears of a lover tn whom any and every thing concerning Ids mistress is of more importance than the total Instantaneous disappearance of a great nation or the collapse of all the thrones of Europe. Suddenly ho saw the velvet curtain—which draped one side of the flower tilled fit > place, at which he was looking—quiver strangely. Scarcely a breath of wind came in through tho open windows, and tho grate was blocked entirely by a shoot of painted looking glass. .Moreover, the curtain on tho other side hung more flatly and closely than its quivering fellow, which bulged out here and therein a manner unknown to artistic, upholsterers. A suspicion Hashed through his dazed brain. Ho sat up with renewed energy and said: “You are describing a very charming character. I am half in love with your delightful description of girlish life and waywardness.'’ He paused and saw the curtain give a quick, waving, tremulous convulsion to its folds, which instantly Itcranto still again as he continued: “Do you think it worth a man’s while to try to exist with half a heart?” “Really,” said the lady, “I am not a specialist In diseases of the heart. ” “Dut,” ho pleaded, “you have broken so many to heal one that your experience must ho of value and your opinion very I well worth hearing—like that of a general I practitioner.” “Well,” u iswcred the young matron i cautiously, “it Is oertainly potter to live | with a whole heart, or ewm with half of one, than without any at all It is more
natural to exist with a heart, and conseqie utly it is more graceful.” “1 am doomed to unguinllncss. then, trouhl ■ that I will (ting the rest after the first part and live a life of unnatural. Inartistic, nightmarish ugliness. I’ity my fate. If only tho sweet tLiuf who has Stolon my heart would give it Imck to mo —with her own—I think I could innnngo to make myself satisfied with my exist-
ence. ’ ’
He was looking tit the curtain, talking to the ttirtai :i. The curtain became agitated and «•••;.ved to and fro. “Well,” said tho si-ter ePapcron, “I think you are i to greedy. Two hearts lie Ini ring to one [lersou is as unnatural t.s no heart." “What shall Ido? Persuade tho thief to exchange the hot : and share it?" “That would ho I . .. 1 think,” she said laughingly and looking in his eyes. He flushed and stared at tho now mo tionless curt iln. Then lie looked hark at her (jiii -tioningly. Tho young dame nod1 Ucd hor fair head slightly and picked up a I piece of needlework lying on a workhasi k. t. A light flashed into Ids eves Ho put j tiio cup and saucer ho had Imvii holding in his hands down tm the tray and half rose from his chair. The lady motioned him to sit down. "Well, cars nro artful things often, and all the task and discussion of them is not artless," she said. “Let us he sensible." "Are wo ever sensible?” lie said stupb’ly. “I don’t know. I wondi r if wo are most sensible when we are most senseless:- They say insane people always fancy themselves sane and others Insane. How queer if all tho lunatics are really sensible and all he sensible world—as we think ourselves—insane! Isn’t it a grewsome idea? See what conu s of speaking of inqiossihiliticH!’’ “Ara you sure wo have been talking of impossibilities?” he inquired anxiously. "What is an impossibility—a future certainty?” “ I hope so," said he. “ I am not perfectly sure Who can tic? But I think that is a right definition.” Ftill lie looked at the curtain, whose strange Inequalities were continually and slowly shifting over its velvet surface, and the sister said quickly: “Dear me, 1 have forgotten to give Davis a most important order! Please pardon me for one moment.” The agitation of tho curtain amounted almost to a distinct shuddering among its folds. Then a still stillness ensued. The sister chaperon was gone. He walked over to the curtain. “Will you take my love and give me yours: ’ he said softly. The curtain fluttered and Instantly drew itself tightly in a crouching human shape. “Forgive mo! Love tiiat con laugh at locks sees through a curtain. 1 love you, darling. Will you take my love for yours?” The curtain did not move. “Do answer, my love! If It Is‘yes,’ lift the curtain; if it is‘no,’let it drop as if was before. ” A second or two and then three white lingers lifted a corner of the velvet He dragged the curtain aside and lifted up a little kneeling llguro with its hands pressed over Its face. “ My beautiful one!” he said, clasping her to him. “What made you hide there?” “I don’t know,” said a soft, mufllod
voice.
“I saw you at the window, did I not,
love?”
“Yes.”
“Then why”— The hands came down, and a pretty, (lushed, childishly round face looked up, dcllantly shy In its Impetuous boldness. “Why, Annie laughed at mo for blushing when I saw you in the mrcet, and I said I wouldn't sec you. 1 a; id n't get; out, and so 1 hid lich' id tho curtain." “But you love me. Say you lave mo. ” “1 never ly what 1 am hidden to say." And her head went down again. “How 1 mg is a moment?” asked the sister, opening t lie d: or. “As short as joy," he said happily. — In Town.
