Bell s does not touch the point at all. They are no more capable or com potent to state the condition of the books of ollicers or ex-officers of the county than is the most ignor ant tax payer in the county, for the simple reason that they were bound down by an iron clad clause

which reads af follows:

But be it understood that this proposition dors not include the examination of the accounts of the officers or exofficers of the county with a view of ascertaining whether or not there is anything due

from them to the county.

The letter of Hunter has a sus ptcious flavor in another line. It bears the date of Oct. 22, and has thus been in the bands of the local gang for ten days. Why wasn’t it printed before? Why has it been held to the last minute and then flung to the county? It was done that the people might not have time to investigate its genuineness. The Banner Times sprung this matter months ago and everybody has had a chance to investigate t he terms ot the contract, but these democratic howlers and papers anil the gang generally withhold a val-

The fact that the letfer is addressed to two of the court house ring gives the snap dead away. The letter was in the opinion of many written by an ex-county official ami the an swers written by the same individual. These ex-oflieers who are running over the county trying to keep people from voting to have the books opened are desperate. They are afraid, and not satisfied with binding experts not to examine their accounts and boc -s they seek to blind the people with some faked up correspondence between isn al legeti taxpayer and two of the con i house crowd. liable (?) letter for ten days licfon Ibinnest of the many schemes the

court nouse gang has worked and the fact that the questions are

giving it to the public. They thus add stealth and subterfuge to a decidedly rotten piece of work all around and one that was gotten up purely and solely to solt-soap the county gang and to mislead the people. The people, however, will not be so easily hood winked. Putnam’s population is intelligent and they have too much sense to be misled by a contract which specially provides that officers hooks shall not be examined. Hun ter’s letter is weaker than Bell’s, both of them being of a direct contradictory nature to themselves.

Republicans, don’t be intimidated. Democrats, hereabouts, falsely how! that republicans are seeking to do dirty work, while democrats are doing it themselves, covering their acts by false alarms.

II UNTUR’S LETTER. The Democrat and the Star Vrcx* both today contain an additional letter on that expert examination that the county underwent and which has been thoroughly exposed in this paper. The last letter is from J. H. Hunter, the chief expert, and he has to write it, probably because the public nearly to a man thoroughly discredited Bell’s letter. It had every indication of being lor.-ed out at a late stage in the game and the people so considered it, and now Hunter writes a letter which is thinner and fuller of meaningless nothings than that of his clerk. In the letter Hunter which bears the date of Oct. 22, and is in answer to

OUR ROUND l t\

The Banner Times rounds up a campaign this week that it is in no wise ashamed of. Early in the campaign this paper laid out Us work and has hewed closely to tbe line through to the end. We have believed for years that were the truth ever known in Putnam’s management that il would disclose gross carelessness and the rankest kind of mismanagement. As the campaign progressed we became more thoroughly of this belief each day. and the foolish and contradictory admissions of the court house crowd and their newspapers have thoroughly convinced us of the correctness of our position. That is not all, however. Five ns true and as honorable men us ever lived in Putnam county took up the light for the right in Putnam, and after some examination of Putnam’s books they became convinced that all was not right; that the books needed investigating: and these men did not hesitate to say so in open meeting. The Banner Times printed their views am' tlie people of Putnam received the

asked on the 2(>th and the answers made on the 29th shows that the deviser of the whole scheme purposely held it all back until the last minute in order that it could not be thoroughly exposed to tbe county. If it had been a square deal the questions would have been printed tbe day they were asked and the answers made the next day. As it was the whole thing is done so surreptitiously and cowardly that it will have no weight with fairminded men. The gang can fool some people some of the time but they can’t hoodwink all of Putnam county all of the time, and next Tuesday’s vote will so demonstrate.

Democrats have not attempted to answer by figure or fact these republican charges, but they contented themselves with tm re assertions that the republican charges were false. The histoiy of the fight in Putnam is an open book. The Banner Times course has been

People ol Putnam should believe none of the democratic papers’ howls about corruption. These cries are made for the express purpose of turning the attention of the people from the court house gang. This crowd and their heelers will stop at nothing- to prevent the books being opened and they howl long and loud to cover up the des perate methods to which they will resort. Keep an eye on them. People who hind experts not to examine hooks of county officers or ex-officers; who den/ rJiat there is a county debt and then are forced to come out, bow their heads and admit openly that they lied in 1ND2 and in IS'.ffi in saying that there was no debt; who charged the accumulation of the debt to men dead and gone from our midst; who slipped in and in a sneaking manner paid ofl' $1000 worth of gravel road bonds within three days alter the same was exposed in open meeting and which bonds bad been due for two years, will not do to trust further. Those are the same parties who now ask you to vote for their candidates continuance in power that they may further pile up a county debt. The people will do nothing of the kind or we miss our guess.

The Ridpatk long spun out fallacies today form a fitting close to the campaign t f misrepresentation and foolish silver democratic argu ment that has been given to tbe people of Putnam this Aampnign. Tbe people know that it is just as important to send a sound money man to congress as is the election of a republican president and none of the Putnam people will be swept otf their feet by the leech story of the “Bond aad the Dollar..” Mr. Sherman, elsewhere in this issue effectually squelches the historian
