county anv money isn’t a part of any expert examination, what is the need of such an examination? If the examination was to be a thorough one why put such a clause in a contract? The court house gang would not allow that clause to be printed when the original contract was made and now the democratic papers take the matter up in a very weak self defense. As a soft soaping scheme tlie sjiectale presented by the ofticers of Putnam in their “examination” takes the prize I!there was nothing wrong in county alfairs what harm would come of an examination of the books of officers or county officers? The two republican county treasurers which Putnam has had in a very long time, both discovered errors in the books which resulted in the turning back into the county of several thousands dollars. Were the books examined in those daj’s by experts? No. They have never been thoroughly examined and so long as a contract is made with the following clause the people have a right to assume that there is something wrong: But be it understood that this proposition does not include the examination of the accounts of the officers or ex-officers of the county with a view of ascertaining whether or not there is anything due from them to the county.

No Meeting Tonight. After announcement in this paper and also by bills printed this morning a telegram arrived elating that Mr. W. D. Foulue was ill and could not reach Greeneastle for tonight’s meeting. This news [•(•al lied here too late to get a substitute, so tonight's meeting is declared oil'. This will lie disappointing to republicans as many of them desire to hear Mr. Foulke.

The Banner Times has smoked the handbill out on that, expert examination and the handbill in a column and a half does not explain matters at all. The people are still in the dark.

The editor of the Democrat is a lawyer but he doesn't know what professional courtesy to his fellow lawyers means, He talks of the republican attorneys of Greeneastle as “jack-legs' all because they do not agree with him politically. Devoid of straight out and fair argument this lawyer-editor seeks to make political capital bv talsely accusing his fellow attorneys and calling them names. He thus shows his pique at failing to succeed in two professions at tne same time. The demonstration Tuesday night in Indianapolis in honor of the “five generals” was a magnificent one. Among the Ih' is General Dan Sickles, of New York, who has always been a democrat, but cannot stand the Chicago stuff called democracy. He was introduced by Col. McLean, of Terre Haute, who voted three times for Cleveland, but is tins year against the boy ranter Bryan. Hon. Thos. Hanna, formerly of this city, presided at the Tomlinson hall meeting.

The Democrat has at last discovered that clause in the contract between Expert Hunter and the county com.uieniouers. it has been over a year learning that such u clause was in the contract and it mentions in now solely because it is driven to it. Senator Mill* For Gold* In 18'it gold became tho standard which measured all values in thiscountry. It is now the standard, the uniform standard, of value of the commercial world. * * * l denounce now in this country the attempt to shift and change the standard of values for the purpose of enabling the debtor to cheat and defraud ids credit r out of one-half of what he lias premised him and in do:?ig so to put the country upon a variable and shifting standard of value, by which the people will be plundered continuously from otto end of it to the other. Every contract now in existence in the United States made since 1879 is on the gold standard, and where a dollar is mentioned it means a gold dollar or one as gtstd ;.s gold, and I will never vote for any law that enables a man to cancel an obligation to pay 100 cents by paying 67 cents.—Senator Roger Q. Mills in the Senate, 1894.

COMMON COUNCIL. City Cannot Interfere in Sale of Cigarettes- Quarterly Claims. The street committee reported on the matter of improvement of Arlingti n street sidewalks and stated that tlie property owners had agreed to make temporary repairs so as to make the side walks pass able. Tlie work will be done as soon as possible and the permanent sidewalk improvement will be post-

poned.

City Attorney Moore reported that the city had no power to place a license on the sale of cigarettes an 1 cited authorities to back the position, showing that the city had no power to regulate the sale of the “coffin nails” by statute There is a state law against sell- [ ing to boys under 1(5 years of age, ^ but over that age it seems that the boys will have full power to smoke | themselves to death. Mayor Birch said there had been a number of women call on him in the interest j of the proposed restaint on the I cigarette traffic and had spoken of the proportion to which the smoking was practiced among boys. There was a general desire to re strict the sale as much as possible j and haye the existing law enforced, j Councilman Browning reported that there was a quart shop in south Greeneastle that had no front windows and that a glass front ' door was being taken down and replaced by a wooden door, this shut ing out all view of the interior during forbidden hours. The citv attorney stated that the laws now cu the statute book would cover that ease and that the police under the instruction of the mayor could take action in the matter. At Bloomington recently several quart shops were filed against for not complying with the Nicholson law and the matter got into the courts. The city treasurer’s report was

referred.

Councilman Hathaway reported that there was considerable live stock loose in the city, and the street committee was instructed to see what could be done in providing a pound. The following claims were al-j lowed, it being quarterly salary
