day night meeting was a gem of misrepresentations that ought to win him a plaee on the ludianapo lis Sentinel. The meeting was one of the best ever held in Cloverdale and it had its el feet. When a republican speech meets with hearty applause and makes a deep impres sion on an audience, democrats at once begin to offset it by deriding the same. The Republican C ounty Central committee met Monday at headquarters. No such meeting from i the standpoint of attendance and enthusiasm was ever before held in the county. It is an unmistakable sign of victory in November, j The reports of committeemen are [absolutely flattering. Individual | democrats are tired of and disgusted with free trade; they don't believe in free silver; and all are amazed at the rottenness ot affairs in Putnam county as lately devel oped, the fact that people never (knew of the bond issues in this I county is astounding to us ail: we are all of us entitled by law to know the records of the county but until death and divorce and such other ilis attendant to human na ture developed it, we never knew of the bond issuss of this county; until a republican is on the board the whole matter has been kept in darkness, and until the Banner Times stirred it up no one knew of a provision in a county contract by commissioners which at once iooks suspicious, tow : t: But be it understood that this proposition does not include the examination of the accounts of the officers or ex-officers of the county with a view of ascertaining whether or not there is anything due from them to the county. The republican party is in fine organization and working condi tion. Let every republican do his best from now on and victory will be their reward in Putnam.
that the democratic crowd ot Putnam does take care of correctly it is seeing that the state gets its $58,000 per year from this count}’. They take more care of the state than ol the county. This man Hunter allowed himself to be bound up by an ingenious contract, prepared no doubt by some slick exotfieei or some oily adviser of the commissioners. OS K OF 11 ID FA TH'S NIGHTMARES Over the district where Dr. Ridpath is making his speech the papers are taking the wind out of his arguments in fine style and are showing that he is decidedly out of his element in his rambling political talks. The Terre Haute E’a’-

It ought to be generally known that at lea-t $1.50.000.000 of the proceeds of the late bonds issued were applied to th<* deficiency caused by the Wilson turitt' bill, and that the balance of the debt would not have been iueurred but for the free silver scare. We owe Unbond issues and their annual interest charges to the silver democrats, and bur for them they would not be a charge upon the country. Bryan is sure of a panic in case of ids election. It is a beautiful vision to place a popociatic panic on top of the present democratic hard times.
One of the most important things to settle this campaign is whether we want a return to good times with protection and reciprocity or do we want to continue hard times by voting for Bryan and a panic. Terre Haute has laid claims for n speech from Gen. Harrison. If Mr. Harrison comes west Greencastie is the logical point for his speech. We have about as good railway facilities as has Terre Haute and should by all means iiave a call from the ex-president if he comes this way. Later: Mr. Harrison will he here on October 21.
Shall we accept as inevitable oiir present humiliating and unprofitable position, or shall we use means at command to regain our lost power and prestige on the ocean? Shall we give that protection and encouragement to our shipping interests that other nations give to theirs, and which we freely give to all our other great interests’ Or shall we, by con tinned neglect, suffer them to be utterly destroyed?
This thing of writing for the benefit of the “common people" and “shaking hands with the toiling masses” sounds well in speeches and in print but it seems that the popocratic candidate for congress who is espousing the same cause as Tillman, Altgeld and Debs isn’t succeeding well. The Clay county Jiepnhlicnn says: Tl.e astute Mr. Ui lpatb says lie “isn’t going to grub ai otiiul for votes.” He means by ihi> that he isn't going to have very iniieh todiiwiih the common people. If there i- a man in the district that feel- his importance more than this mail Ridpath we would like to see him. Helloes not want to come in contact with the sturdy laboring men of the district. He only wants to associate with the nabobs ami men of leisure. He is willing to advnuee llieorie-for the laborer.-,' but unwilling to associate with them. Gentleman Georg*; W. Fans, while the superior of Ridpatli in everything necessary for a worthy congressman, is, to use an old expression, as common as an old shoe. He is and always will he a true friend of the common people, and his majority in November will make Bidpath realize that be is entirely too stilf to be a popular candidate with the common people. The handbill has developed a liar down at Cloverdale who has a bright prospect of winning the prize. His write up of the Satur-
In his speech Monday night Carfey Alston said: “Senator Stew art said gold was the mother of civilization. Don't forget your mother, boys.” That is a happy and original argument and one that is to the point. Democrats may make fun of the negro all they please but their arguments knock out free silver talks readily and easily.
The Star Press man has wisely delegated the remainder of this campaign in Putnam to other hands and is gathering in his “protected” rice crop in Louisana. The Star Press has seen the hand writing on the wall, and turns itself over to the hands ot tlx* court house gang to edit for the rest of the struggle With Harrison. Beveridge, Grif fith, Pitkins and a dozen other good speakers the republicans will close their campaign in Putnam with a whirl of enthusiasm and glory the like of which local democracy never before saw.
When a party accuses itself comment from the other side is hardly necessary. In Putnam county a soft so p. investigation of county hooks was agreed upon and an expert went into the matter up on a percentage basis upon a con tract.
