They have the silver basis in India, iiave had it for centuries, and it has had a fair trial. It would ruin this country and bankrupt everybody. Thefountain of business is stability, an ; with a silver standard youca>i never have it. In Calcutta I can buy this suit of clothes for $40 i today, and perhaps $20 tomorrow, and the next day 't will be $50. You can never tell from the number of dollars you ow how much you are worth. The I country is at the mercy of th { money changers and specula jtors. The idea of going to a sii1 ver standard from a gold one is too ridiculous for serious co; - j sideration. i have seen enough I of this in India.-Bi4iop T';t) , >ur s'! opinion afHrtiiotl mnl emlorseil > r Ms

The paradoxes and fallacies of the free silver advocates are plentifully illustrated in tho interesting letters of
workingmen to The World.
One set stoutly maintain that there would be no cheap dollar or 50 cent dollar under free coinage. If the white metal were given unlimited coinage it would instantly rise, they say, to i*1.20 an ounce. The present price of (is cents they attribute to the demonetization in 1873, though a silver dollar was then worth more than a gold one, and none
was coined or in circulation.
Another and the more numerous class j at the south and west insist that what tho country needs is a cheaper dollar. The good eld gold dollar of Jeffemm, Jackson and Benton has been “forti.l up” in value, they say. They want a dollar of about half itsvalue to increase tho price of their products and to enable them to pay their debts at half the present cost and trouble. As Mr. Bryan put it in Ills letter to The World, they would “restore the parity between money and property” by reducing the
value of the dollar.
Now botli of these theories cannot be true. They are flatly contradict'ry. If silver would appreciate under free coinJ ago, there would bo no cheap money. Prices would not vise. Debts could not bo scaled down. If it would not uppre-

How Gold Gets It* Plate. R. P. Dexter of Galva, Ills., asks: “Why was silver demonetized? “Did any country ever come to a gold standard through the efforts or the wishes of the people of that country?” The two questions may be answered together. The people of many countries have discon'inued the use of silver as standard money (demonetized silver) because they prefer gold. Secretary Morton said in a public address the other day that they deferryized flat boats on the Missouri river in the neighborhood of Omaha because steamboats served the purpose better. Later they di ferryized steamboats because a steel bridge served their purpose better still. They didn’t make those changes as the result of an election, but as a matter of business. In like niuuiier the principal commercial nation; i abandoned silvir and accepted go! , the standard. They have not done so Ly any town meeting process, b-:r, simply as a mutter of busi-
ness.
Tn the dealings ( f men living in diferont countries, or in what is called international trade, there is no standard prescribed by law, or lawful money. But gold has been accepted ns the standard by common consent. Tho people engaged in this trade prefer gold. Only a shi rt time ago Bolivia deliberately abandoned tho silver standard and adopted the gold standard. What

A Gri-at Prosperity Ileitorer! While the debt paying power of silver is doubled the purchasing power will ho reduced one-half. There is not a man, bo ho laborer on tho street or president of the United States, but would find that his daily wages or hia yearly salary went only half as far as it went in the days when silver was kept at par with gold. There is not a widow or an orphan but would find that the life insurance policy was w' rth in purchasing power but half of v. hat it would have been worth, or a pensioner but would find that his $12 a month was worth but $ff. And some men are persuaded that by such a policy prosperity can be restored to the laud.—Cincinnati Commercial Tribune.
Cheating the Creditor. If these glorifiers of the old order of things could restore the conditions that prevailed previous to 1SI3 and make tho market value of silver what it was then, they would not want free coinage. There would bo nothing in it for them. What they really want is cheap money, a kind of money with which creditors can bo cheated. They are not trying to put silver uack to its old place and reestablish the monetary system that existed before the "great crime” was couimitted. Their scheme does not imply the coinage of better dollars than those we now have, but infinitely poorer ones, which can be used in the payment of debts ut tho rate eif 68 e’e nts on tho dollar.—St. Leiuis Globe-Democrat.
