Private Joj Cheadle in changing his politics could not erase some of his familiar sayings that It -- r in the memories of th ■ old inossbucks of his new district. Th y propose to ev m up, for while he "sp :nt four y irs of his young manhood in shooting at Democrats,” they will he busy the in ,.t 00 days using him for a target on election day. Let us all hope they may each hit the bull’seye and lay oat tin r mega l for time and eternity. As editor of the (iniaha World-Herald Mr. Bryan s* .ns to have devoted himself almost exclusively to firing at Democrats. In single loads and double leads, week days and Sundays, he riddled them fore aud aft. And now the outlook is that that they will be so busy picking shot out of each other that they will not have time to go to the polls. In one of his speeches iu congress Mr. Bryan said th it “A tariff of 10 per cent levied purposely for protection is, us far as the priuciplo is concerned, just as indefensible as a tariff of a thousand per cent.” Bryau will not deny that he is an absolute free trader, bat he prefurs to say nothing about it iu this campaign. There rould be no more odious kind of class legislation tlmii that which the Democratic party seeks to effect in the form of u 5o per cent reduction of wages for the beuefit of the owners of silver mines. Long, Loud and Strong. The arguments for protection mast he vigorous aud loud enough to he heard plainly in Nebraska during this campaign, because Mr. Bryan finds that “arguments in traveling that long distance become somewhat diluted and often polluted.” So let us have them strong and healthy, that they may withstand his Nebraska dilution and pollu-
tion.
Hryi-n Would Uestroy It. Because the wool growing industry is small iu comparison with other agricultural interests Free Trader Bryan favors free wool. Why not give it protection and a chance to grow again? His "Vicious” Idea. If protection be “viciousin practice,” os Mr. Free Trader Bryan says, thee to operate our factories, to employ Americau labor ami to pay wages to Americans is “vicious in practice."
