Hie jury in the Priest seduction case retired Wc Inesday afternoon to their room but could only agree to disagree. They were out all night and were dismissed this morning at ten o'clock. It t* stated that they stood eight for conviction and four for acquittal. Word wa- received here this morning that the resigna:ion of Wilbur Starr as adjutant of the First battalion. 1st Indiana National guards had been accepted and that Sergeant Major Delos* F. Albin had been appointed first lieutenant amt adjutant to till the vacancy. The Young Ladies Home Missionary Circle of College Avenue church after an exciting contest, on Wednesday elected the following ofticers: Miss Margaret Gilmore, president; Miss Blanche Swahlen, first vice president, Miss Grace Farrow, second vice president; Mrs. II. M. Smith, recording secretary ; Miss Olive Stanley, corresponding secretary, Miss Ve.'nie Weaver,
treasurer.
Dan Hurst was in town today. Dan can scent political trouble further than anybody and is the shrewdest one of the Putnam democratic politicians. When there is anything to ‘'tix” Dan is generally sent for and it is believed that he got in today to fix up a new tuil-IIolt for democracy. Dau grew poetical when asked for political news and stated to the Banner Times that there wasn’t any politics out where he lives, and that “the cattle squalls when he bawls,” etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. All of which shows that Dan knows a politcal spade from apolitical club Nathan Chatman’s residence on east Washington street was burglarized some time between Monday noon and Tuesday morning. All tbo occupants of the house were out of town at the time and no one was around until Tuesday morning about nine o’clock, when a neigbor boy went into the yard to feed the chickens and found the back door open. Mrs. Chatman returned home about nine o’clock Tuesday evening and found the entire contents of the house turned upside down, and all of Mr. Chatman's wearing apparel missing. The burglars had been painstaking in their work and every dish in the safes was uncovered, every box of papers, trinkets, etc., in the house and every little bundle of rags was ooened. Mr*. Mary Allison’s rooms in the house and her rooms were also entered. Some silver dishes are missed, in addition to
tiie clothes.
E. W. Harleman, who has been visiting his sister-in-law, Mrs. Harleman, on south Indiana street, has gone to Indianapolis and St. Louis ami will afterwards go to his home in tiie City of Mexico. Mr. Harleman has large business interests In Mexico, among them being coal mines, the first ever opened in the republic. He is also an owner of stock in silver mines. And in additition, he is a sound money man. He says that he is a “silver” man in Mexico because Mexico’s free silver boomed his silver mines and increased the production although the price for silver is just as low or even lower now than before the silver standard was adopted He also says that the same would be the case in the United States if tiie populistic idea of coinage should prevail From his smelting works m Kansas City, lie could, under free coinage, take his entire stocs of bullion to the mints and have them coined into dollars, making nearly 100 per cent profit out of the deal, just a* any other bullion owner would do. Mr. Harleman stated that in the City of Mexico, there art
the County Clerk’s ottiiee. Elder C. Thomas of Danville officiating. George Kohler, the burglar, who robbed Dr. Overstreet’s residence, was arraigned in circuit com t this afternoor Kohler plead guilty and was sentenced to three years in tiie penitentiary.
