i They have the silver basis in India, have had it for centuries, and it has had a fair trial. It would ruin this country and bankrupt everybody. The fountain of business is stability, and with a silver standard you can never have it. I n Calcutta I can buy this suit of clothes for $40 today, and perhaps $20 tomorrow, and the next day 't will be $50. You can never tell from the number of dollars you own how much you are worth. The country is at the mercy of the money changers and speculators. The idea of going to a silver standard from a gold one is too ridiculous for serious consideration. I have seen enough [of this in India.—Bishop Thoburn’s | opinion alliniifd and endorsed over his

Democrats believe in partiality; republicans in fairness Democrats chose five out of eight county candidates for office from Greencastle and the other three from two townships. Eleven townships have no representation whatever upon their county ticket. The republicans divided as fairly as possible. Eight townships are represented by eight candidates. The offices are distributed and Greencastle gets but one—all she is entitled to. Voter think of this between now and November!

TUB TBUB AND THE FALSE, An Anrartcan silver Collar, (bedollaf the Republican platftimi will perpetuate, now practically boys two Mexican dollars, the kind the Democratic platform sonka to mint and circulates. The Republican dollar has thus double the purchasing power. The Mexican dollar, the Dtshocrutic idea of a silver standard, Dow pays labor In- Its domain less than ono-thlrd the wages imid audoj the standard of the Republican dollar. Change the conditions—Mexlcanizo our mints and silver—and yon debat e our dollar and at tho same time make a greater reduction in tho parity and prices of labor. Tho free coinage dollars arc commercial dollars, fluctuating with tho shuttlecock values of bullion, while the Republican dollars are over and always 100-cent dollars because maintained by tho world's standard of gold. Tho free coinage countries that Democracy would have as lino up with «ro China, Japan and Mexico, whore the workingman is a serf and always a tenant. Labor Is dependent upon capital for emph iyment Business fills its arteries from tho coffers of capital. Enterprise gets its Inspiration from the comradeship of capital. Capital is tho oxygen of commercial and industrial life, bat tho mainspring of its energy is ooufldonco. Tho success of Democracy and free coinage will produce such a paralysis of confidence that capital will not flow into the channels of industrial investment, and u condition of distress and business demoralization is ascertain to follow us does death whuu tho heart ceases to beat, and tho saffercre will be those who depend upon dally employment for daily broad.

WHEN M'KINLEY IS ELECTED. With tho election of McKinley and a Republican congress will como the reenactment of reciprocity and an increase of duties sufficient, at least, to meet the expenses of the government. Reciprocity guarantees enlarged markets for the surplus products of every farm in Indiana. Tho revival of confidence consequent upon the ability of Uncle Earn to pay his way as ho goes, without selling bonds to make Saturday night reach over until Monday morning, will energize every industrial enterprise in tho laud, give back to labor its profitable payroll, and thus increase tho consumption of the staples of life, now so low because of the enforced idleness of unemployed workingmen. The home market is dependent upon the prosperity of home industries. Idle mou means empty cupboards. Our foreign market for farmers depend largely on reciprocity. Under Harrison wo wore adding to our list of consumers by a reciprocity of commercial favors. Under Cleveland and his free trade lunacy, reciprocity was blacklisted and these new customers forced into other markets. The home markets and tho foreign markets are what bring prosperity t > the farmer, and this is tho McKinley mission of Republicanism. THE GERMAN PHALANX. The German character is ever and always strong, sturdy and stalwart. The principle of frugality reaches from the Fatherland to wherever the sun may shine on one of the Teuton race. Being thrifty, economical and careful, always intent ou providing not only for tho present, but for tho future of his family, the German is conservative and builds on a rock rather than the shifting sands. This is one reason why the German soldier is every inch an engine of war and why Wilhelm has an empire invincible. When the greenback craze swept over the country tho German voters were a solid phalanx against the demagogic dispensation of fiat! They saved Ohio from the repudiationlsts of that ago. And, so in this campaign, of the 50,000 German voters in Indiana, an umbrella will shelter those in any ouo community who will voto to stamp 50 cents worth of silver os $1 and Mexicanizo not only our finance but our Individual conditions. Free silver is the antithesis of German tradition and German honor in finance, and will have no more effect in alluring the German vote than would a broadside of snowballs in piercing an

armada.

Had tho McKinley tariff not been repealed, onr national Income would have paid all of Uncle Sam’s expenses without the necessity of issfiing bonds in times of peace. Reciprocity was opening profitable markets for our grain and sttxk. and ere this every surplus product of tho farm would have been in demand from the countries beyond tho seas. But Democratic free trade abrogated reciprocity and reduced our revenues. Markets lowered prices, because abrogated reciprocity cut off the McKinley demand. Ihe treasury borrowed unaioy to pay expenses because tho repeal of tho McKinley bill beggared revonues, and so the disaster was a doubleondor, placing its heavy hand on the producers and filching with its skeleton fingers infinitely more money for eurrent expenses than the free trade policy produced. Tho free trade lunacy of | Cleveland's administration has cost this country, directly and indirectly, more money than did tho suppression of the rebellion. It was a popular measure before tho people in 1892. Disastrous as has boon its practical application. It does not compare with the ruin that will oome with u change of our financial

FOR THE WEST.

Summer Keaorta un the Monon. The summer resorts on the Monon route are more than usually popular this year. West Baden and French Lick Springs, in Orange county, are overflowing with visitors, and the hotels have all they can do. Paoll, the county scut, has opened a rival sanitarium, which is well patronized. The waters of the various springs differ materially in their constituents, and arc successfully prescribed fora great variety el maladies. The woods in the neighborhood abound in game and all the streams teem with fish, some of them having been stocked by the government fish commission. All indication.- point to West Baden (and the neighboring springs) as the great sanitarium and popular sutnmt r resort of the west. Cedar Lake, forty miles from Chicago, is a favorite picnic and outing spot, where the Motion lias a fine wooded park of nearly 400 acres. The fishing is first rate. dcod w tf.
