ST. PETER’S EVE. Pope Leo Goes to Pray at the Tomb of the

Chief Apostle.

From time Immemorial the well containing the marble staircase which lends down to the tomb of St. Peter hns been called the Confession. The word, I believe, is properly applied to the altar rail, from the ancient practice of rejKiatlng there the general confession immediately tiefore receiving the communion, a custom now somewhat modified. But I may l>e wrong In giving this derivation. Indeed, a marble balustrade follows the horseshoe shape of the well, and u]H>n it are placed 1)5 gilded lamps, which burn perpetually. There j is said to be no special significance In the 1 number, and they produce very little effect

' * by daylight.

But on the eve of St. Peter's day and perhaps at some other seasons the pope has been known to come down to the church by the secret staircase leading Into the Chapel of the Sacrament, to pray at the apostle's tomb. On such occasions a few great candlesticks with wax torches aro placed on the floor of the church, two and two, between the chapel and the Confession. The pope, attended only by a few chamberlains and Noble guards and dress ed In his customary white cassock, passes swiftly along in the dim light and descends the steps to the gilded gate lienoath the high altar. A marble pope kneels there, too—Plus VI of the Braschi faintly—his stone draperies less white than Pope Leo’s cassock, his marble face scarcely whiter than the living pontiff's alabaster features. Those are sights which few are privileged to see. There Is a sort of centralization of mystery, If one may couple such

CONEY ISLAND. A Modern LnglUh Discoverer of New Tork’s Great Summer Resort. I h;ul pointcxl out to me the other day a man who discovered Coney Island—some two decades later than most of us, to ho sure, but none too late for his own satisfaction. Mr Shelley of the Oriental hotel was exhibiting him. “1—ah—saw the place from—ah—the deck of the—ah—steamer coming ovah, ' said ho, "and I—ah—thought I’d see what sort of a place It was, don't you know And, upon me wonl, I And it nmst astonishing at the—-ah—cheaper end, you know, and doosid comfortable heah." His formal and delilierate manner of putting his place uez glasses up to his eyes, after much bother with the chain to which they were attached, suggested a perpetual alertness for discovery. He never merely looked at anything. One cannot call the work of an astronomer “looking at things,” anil this Englishman brought the same effort anil aid of glasses to his simplest visual action. When a newsboy rushed at him with a pa[>er. moaning to sell it like lightning, before it liocame old and worthless by the arrival of a later edition, the Englishman went through the same serious preliminaries w ith his glasses ami ended by making the little arah feel that he also hail been discovered, that no one had overlooked at him before. Indeed, the startled lad shot his own eyes all over himself as If he suspected that ho hud been si-en all over and might find himself naked. Thus the Englishman looked at Coney Island, after it hod grown ancient under Indian, Dutch, English and American rule, and discovered It and brought to It a case of apollinaris and a bathtub, so as to be sure to have those luxuries while ho was there.—Julian Ralph lu Scribner’s.
