‘•Billy” Thompson and his son Raymond participated in a sweep-stake shooting match at Poland on Saturday. They report poor sport, as on account of the heat, it was a much more desirable thing to the average marksman to lie around in the shade than to attempt to shoot in the hot sun. They carried oft'their share of the prizes, however, young Thompson winning two out <f
five matches.

Mount had to take an old ambulance wagon that did neighborhood duty as a hearse, Friday, in order to fill a date in Putnam county.—Lebanon He/ f'rter. The Reporter is mistaken. Nothing of the kind occurred in this county. The item grew out of a story Mr. Mount told of an experience in a former campaign tour in Brown county. John Watt, the rotund and good natured gas man, is putting in Ids time between sweats these hot days in perfecting a patent gas stop cock that he thinks will cause a revolution in the matter of safety appliances in gas pipes. The invention will do away with the sidewalk boxes now to be seen in front of every business house, as they are there merely for cut ofi" purposes. 1 he patent is attached to a gas pipe where it enters a building and in ease of fire the heat will cause it to act in a selfclosing manner, thereby saving the loss of gas. Mr. Walt has the idea protected by a caveat and is thus not averse to
talking of it.

This declaration was made with a ho]>o of Sparks get ing the endorsement of the populists, hut 'the populists were too wise for the
