A Con>in*rrl*l Tradition Which Has Loci It* Force In New York. For tho piirpoiww of retail buHlncs» the two sides of every thoronghfere were for merly thus divided: Tlie left hand side, gohiK north or the rlftht hand side roIiir south along any br<vnd street or Hvonno of | New York was the “dollar" or more profitable side, and tho right hand going north | or the left hand going cast was the shilling side, devoted to less productive business matters and depending chiefly upon tho patronage of persons of more modest In-| conies and slender purses. In the early j commercial life of New York city the west side of Broadway was considered to be the more desirable for retail business. Tho 1 stores upon it paid a much larger rent than those on the side opposite, and not only was this tho case, but, as the New Yorkers of a goneratlon ago remember, the west or "dollar" sido was tho more popu-1 lar for pedestrians, especially during the i promenade on fair afternoons. An icono- I clast of mercantile customs ami traditions j was tho late A. T. Stewart, and it was his | constantly avowed belief that a rule of | business or affairs which had no other! backing hut that of usage or precedent did j not amount to much and could usually be j i overridden to tho advantage of a pioneer ] against it. Tho present Stewart building | at tlie corner of Broadway and Chambers struct is on wluit was tho shilling side of that thoroughfare, and when Mr, Stewart determined to move his dry goods ostab- : lishmont up town ho chose by preference ! the location at Broadway and Tenth street, also on the shilling side, and built there, i contrary to tho views of his rivals In tho dry goods business. But Mr. Stewart's departure from tho unwritten business rule of years did not abrogate it in the dry goods trade, and the preference for tho dollar side and tho prejudice against tho shilling side survived | by many years the use of shillings as a moasuro of purchasu in dry goods stores. Little by little, however, the once unwritten law of retail trade has fallen Into disuse, and now tho right hand side of tho public thoroughfares in New York devoted to store purposes, if not quito ns good ns the left hand side of the same street, is, among real ‘-state men and retail dealers, considered to be marly as good.—Now York Sun.
One Nww Yorker Who !■ Engaged Escloalreljr In That Occupation. There are many men, and their number Is constantly Increasing, who are shaved at their homos dally by a harbor who comes for that purpose, and so there is a considerable number of barbers who do more or less of their work away from the shop. But there Is perhaps only one man In the city who Is exclusively a visiting barber. Most of the work done In houses Is performed before 10 o'olock in the morning. This harbor has a few such customers whom he attends to before that hour, but most of his work is done in down town business offices between the hours of 9:30
a. m. and 4 p. in.
Ten years or so ago the visiting barber, then having a shop In a down town street, | went out one day to shave a customer in his office, a wholesale business man, who was too busy to come to the shop. There- : after he shaved this customer regularly at his office, and from that beginning grew his preneot trade. As outside customers oanio Ui Mm lie attended to them all personally, and Anally, about three years ago, he gave up hto shop altogether am) has slnoo devoted himself entirely to visiting work, which he finds more profitable. His customers are chiefly among wholesale

The Russian 1 Vii.ttntV Faith In His Bovereigii’n Omnipotence. A man who was present at tho coronation of the late czar says in Lo Courrlor des Ktats-Unls that ho has kept like a never to bo forgotten vision tbo memory of tho ecstasy of tho crowd prostrated at the threshold of the church where the holy mystery was taking place. "I recall,” ho odds, “a certain little old woman whose extraordinary fervor drew tears to our eyes. Over her dirty dress she carried a ragged bag, which contained doubtless a piece of black bread. She was evidently from some distant province and had boon walking for a month or more, living on alms, sleeping in a stable with the cattle, impelled by a mysterious force. Perhaps she was fulfilling a vow, perhaps her poor disordered brain pictured Moscow ns a place of felicity, a paradise, where the unhappy would bo cured of their sorrows. Squatted in tho mud, her hands clasping a shepherd’s staff, she was gazing fixedly before her. Her wrinkled face of waxlike color was transfigured with enthusiasm. Her lips murmured a prayer, but her eyes were gazing into heaven. There was in this eye a superhuman expression, sad and serene at the same time. This woman was dead to all thought, to all sentiment of real life. She existed us In a dream. Touched with pity, I approached her and slipped a ruble into her hand. Without a glance at him who bestowed this fortune the old woman evidently believed that a mlraulo bud been accomplished. Tears ran down her cheeks, and she extended her arms toward the father, toward tho czar, to whom she attributed this benefit."

cited so much interest:
Some years ago ids majesty was out in tho mountains lion hunting when, in tho evening, a terriflo thunderstorm came on, with tlie result that lie had to seek shelter in the first house or hut to which ho came. This happened to bo tho bumble abode of a shepherd, who had hut one child, a buy. During tho night the shall heard tho child cry, and feeling uneasy his majesty left his room and visited tho child. Scarcely, however, had ho loft his apartment when the roof gave way and fell upon the bed upon which ho had just boon lying. Had the shah been there ho would hove inevitably been killed. Ho wu$ much startled and attributed- Ids deliverance from a violent death to tho boy, stating that tho child must have boon inspired by Mohammed. Tlie following morning the shall directed that both tho boy and Ids father should thenceforward remain in personal attendance upon him. Tlie boy then became known throughout Persia as Aziz Sultan, or tlie “sultan's darling." Tlie shah never went out without the boy. The father was subsequently promoted to high rank in tho Persian army and accompanied the shall in his east European travels.—London News.
but then a wholesale leather merchant was added to his list, and ho lias now a num-
ber of customers in tlie swamp.
Those customers did not all desire to be shaved at tlie same time, and so it was comparatively easy to make a working schedule. Tho barber appears at the office of each customer at tho same time dally. The places to be visited are all pretty close together, and but little time is lost in going from one to another. Partly for that reason and partly because tho work is done on six days in the week only, instead of seven, the charge for this work is a little less than for work done at homo. It is ta week, Which, however, includes liair cut-
ting as well as shaving.
The object of the business limn who is shaved at his office is to save time. T it) object of the man who is shaved at homo is both convenience and comfort. The
man
ways to bo shaved by the
barber whose work lie likes and whom he has picked out himself. Tho barber eonies to tho house seven days In the week at the same hour dally. Tlie ruling price for this work in the very best shops is $15 a month. Some shops do the work for $12, and it Is
sometimes done for $10.
The man who pays $15 a month for tho barber to come to Ids house pays that for a daily shave only. Hair cutting and other work are extra. For hair cutting ho pays 75 cents. If he has his hair cut two or throe times a month and has any other work done, his bill may easily reach $18 a month, which is n figure not unusual. It may come to more than that. If tho barber has to wait, no account is taken of a detention of a few minutes, but if he has to wait half an hour or more tho time is charged for at tho rate of $1 an hour.—
