The Boston cl eh held its last meeting on Saturday evening at the home of the Misses Adams east of town. The pntri tisin of its members was shown by the intense interest they manifested on the reading of a pr.per by Miss Augusta M"( oy. who had for her subject “The Biuh-ptaee of American Liberty.’’ The-econd paper of the evening was on the life of Dorothea Dix by Mis- Kmm i Jones. The Cincinnati newspaper arti-t' who are practicing on Greencastle pet - pie are missing their calling perceptibly. Some of those alleged artists •hoeld be mauling rails. There have b "ii many ludicrous pictures made and labelled for Greener.stle citizens, but if ciy one inis a real good cause for action it is Harry Hays for the picture the Cohnnerriol Git.elie made of him yesterday. Hifry should frame that effort. A merchant recently said: “There can he no doubt but that the growth of the bicycle craze has in jured business.

; to the capacious pockets of bicycle manufacturers. In many instances the merchant is asked to wait for his money that the bicycle payment.-may In- made. People wear cheaper clothe.-, eat less I . | desire for a hike.” file DeMos- Family concert last evening was a disappointment to many. The company evidently forgot the most essential part of their program, namely music. There was very little music in their selections. There was considerable noise and rattle but the harmony was lacking. The vocal music was but little better than the instrumental and considerable vigorous comment was indulged in bv some attending. Some of the numbers .vere good, the xylophone and band selections meeting the most favor. Upon the whole however, the program hardly reached the dignity of a church musical entertainment. Mr. John V/. Kobe met with a seriouaccident Tuesday afternoon on hi- way to his farm. He wa- driving a pair of mules hitched to a farm wagon and in the wagon wa- a corn planter. In going down a steep h.11 about two miles out of town, near Browning's branch, the brake on hi- wagon failed to work, and in order to keep the load oil the team as much as pos-ible, Mr. Kobe pulled the team to the side of the road They got too far over, however, and the waimu tipped enough to throw the coi nplanter out In trying to hold the machine in Mr. Kobe was pulled out ami fell under tlie heavy planter. Ono rib was broken and the point punctured a lung. Help reached him in a few minutes but a trip to bis farm two miles further on was necessary before a conveyance could secured. Mr. Kobe was then driven home and reached here about two hours after he was hurt. Dr. Bence attended him and he is resting easily as possible today. Mrs. J. B. DeMotte. Mrs. Washburn and Mrs. I,. B. Case entertained at the re-ieence of Mrs. DeMottce !ll!> south College Avenue, Tu day afternoon. The hours were from two to six o'clock and there were 117 invitations out. with but few regrets following. The well appointed residence was handsomely decorated with early spring Mowers, white lilacs being the principal ones, they being arranged in profusion through all Hie rooms. A large bowl of lilacs occtioi-d the table in the center ot the beautifi’* dining room. I’uncn was served during tlie afternoon by Masters Henry Washburn anil L hn B. DeMotte. The hosie—as were charmingly and ably assisted by the following ladies: Mesdames I’. $. Baker, M.J. Beckett, Jonathan Birch, Mary Florer. J. H. Hollingsworth, F. U. Lamniers, J. K. Miller, K. A. Ogg, Anna Southard, Andrew Stephenson, Ellen R. Tii gley; Misses Grace, Helen and Mary Birch’, Belle Hanna, Olive Miller and Blanche Swahlen and little Misses Ruth Baker, K ina Arnold and Helm Black. Those attending wi'l long remember the pleasant afternoon, and all -peak highly of the event. Refreshments of sliced dee cream, white and fruit cake and coffee were served in the dining

room.

A charming musical recital was given last evening at seven o’clock at the residence of M rs. Dr. Gubin. The performers were net old in music, being the infant class in tlie aii, hut tlicir work drew the closest attention from parents and imited guests, who knew that a great deal depends upon the proper and correct foundation of a musical education. Tlie little players occupied the front parlor, the audience lilling the rear parlor and the reception hall. They were ihe pupils of Miss Mildred Rutledge and Hiey gave a program of gcad music well selected from recognized eouiposcrs. Those taking part n the program were Flo-sie Kelley. A ma Ibals Goblli, Mas Dellon. Helen Black, Hazel Bridges and Nellie Bowen. Their playing was clear, precise and brilliant and showed that great credit is due Mi-- Rutledgo as a oainstaking and careful teacher. Miss Rutledge holds a teachers’ certiticatc from tlie Del’anw school of music and is continuing her ow n studies there and at tlie same time carrying forward her class in Greencastle, at Brazil and aCenter Point. Her pupils of last evening are children of our own city and give due promise of what wc may look for along that line a few years hence. About twenty live guests were present and all were well pleased with what they -aw fid heard. Miss Josephine Armstrong’s recital has been postponed till next week. MisPerie Meltzer will assist Mis- Arm-

('. W. Strong leaves today for Indinapolis, w here he has a position in a wholesale company’s oltlee. J. T. Stewart’s residence on cast Wa-hlngton street was visited by a burglar last night. Entrance was effected through a west window, which the gentleman opened after cutting a neat hole through tlie window glass and .•al -iiig the catch. Nothing was taken except a gold watch. The smell of the sulphur matches used awakened Mrs. Stewart who called to know who was using them, and the visitor left hastily, it is thought that it was the same man

who visited Dr. Tucker’s and H. S. Renick’s during the night, but entrance was not effected at ei lierof these places. That cake walk at Brazil came off alright last night but Hugh Homey's heart failed him at the last moment and the spectators looked 111 vain for his appearance. Tarry Hill, of Brazil, carried oil the (irst prize and Henry Taylor, of Hus city, carried off the cake as a close second. The Terre Haute champion, Frank Tullett, expre-sed himself as being disappointed at the non-appearance of Mr. Horney, but it is best for Frank's reputation that Hugh did not appear. The WemanV club will give an informal reception to Mrs. Washburn and Mrs. DeMotte on Thursday afternoon, April 30. from three to five o’clock at ne residence of Mrs. Jonathan Birch. Miss Shcpperd, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, lias returned to her home in Grand Rapids, Mich. Hon. 8. It. Lowe anil Hon.
