The ('< niocrntic newspaper* of Putnam county, that art* howling so vociferously against the management of city offices, should post up u little. Tax payors in Green castle arc now paying less taxes than they did last year. This statement can be substantiated at any time by looking over Treasurer Gilmore's books. G eencastle is out of debt, not a eent of indebtedness, and there lias been a saving of two thousand dollars in the year just closing over the years pieced ing. The sehooi bonds are all paid otf. The handsome new lire build ing has heeu paid for and no special hind was created for that purpose. It was paid for out of a sur plus accumulated by the careful managemcLt of city affairs. The city borrowed a sum of money last year to bridge over a period of sixty days but it was immediatly paid back. Next year promises even greater reductions and a bet ter showing. If there is not too great a falling oil' in assessment the rate next year it is confidently estimated will be cut to 85 cents. There is now a surplus in the city treasury and Greeneastle is ready to go out and compare records with any other city in the state. Many of Indiana's cities, especially those under democratic control, are in debt, but Greeneastle is not. Greeneastle has something to show for money spent. Where are there better streets, fire protection, fire department, lights, and government than in Greeneastle? The daily papers are full of news from other cities of the stories of crimes, sa loon fights, disturbances of the peace, and the organization of (food Citizens leagues and other brdies of good people to suppress law violators and bring criminals tr justice. There is nothing of the kind here. True, we have a Good Citizen’s 'eague, but it has little matelial to work on. The city is officered better than »ny city of its size iu the state and all laws are obeyed. Why make a change? Do we want democratic methods? Do we want a great reduction in salaries and an increase in taxation? Do we want incompetent councilmen who will act as democrats do in county affairs and entangle us in $1)00 law suits? The only way to propctly guage the efficiency of of ficial work is by the work of the officials; by their records. Republican rule in Greeneastle will bear inspection but 1’utnnm county has absolutely nothing to show for money spent. Voters of Grecncas tie should think of these things and not be misled by lalse cries of democratic “reform.” Democratic reform is a disease, which should

roundly bv democrats as well as ly republicans as being utterly unfit

He would not be superintendent if be were not a relative of Boss Farmer of the county board of commissioners, There are plen tv of capable democrat;? in Putnam county who could manage that farm well, but they are east aside to make room for a commissioner's pet who has easily broken into court in bis short term. Do we want any such men in control in the city? If so we suggest the voter vote for Walls, Hroadstreet and Buis. If good government is wanted vote the republican ticket.

Mr. N. 1\ S«-rilMM»r UtrAign* the Nomination Tendered Him Saturday. On Saturday night it was dis covered that Mr. N. F. Scribner, the popular young nominee of the republican party for assessor, was not eligible to the office for the fact that ho had not been a resident bouse bolder and free holder for four years. The resignation of Nelson F. Scribner from the republican ticket is a move that will in no wise affect that gentleman or the party. Mr. Scribner's nomination came to him unsought and he, and perhaps ninty nine out of a hundred others, did not know the law requiring a mun to be a bouse bolder and a free holder for four years preceding the election. Mr. Scribner greatly re grets the fact that lie cannot make Hie race as he has lots of demo eratic friends who were ready to support him. The central committee will fill the ensuing vacancy, and a full attendance of the committee should follow the call to be found elsewhere in this issue.

Day.

Severai. chunks of solid wisdom were left here by Col. Thompson w.tb voters on Saturday. Among other things said by the great speaker in a private conversation was the fact that modern democracy had degenerated. Col. Thomp son said that later day detnoeiacy was totally different from that of Jackson’s time. Jackson is pointed out and is referred to as the ideal of democracy, but he was a pro tectionist, and therefore differed radically from the later day rampant free traders. This point was well taken by Mr. Thompson and it should be thought oyer by voters.

Chairman Case has issued a call for the coun'y committee to meet on Saturday, May 2, at 11 o’clock

Fried Food. Fried food according to Mrs. Ewing's method of preparation is hygienic and appetizing. The more fat used the freer from grease will be the food. Heat from tbiec to five pounds of cottolene or lard, and place it in a wire basket for frying, the temperature of the fat shou d be such as to brown a bit of potato. Potato straws are prepared by slicing a large potato into thin slices and cutting into strips. Let stand in cold water for any length of time, dry thoroughly in a cloth, put the straws a few at a time into the wire basket in the fat; when browned season with salt and tumble out upon a clean cheese cloth to remove the grease. Send news to Telephone 95.

Democrats believe in partiality; republicans in fairness. Democrats chose five out of eight county candidates for office from Greeneastle and the other three from two townships. Eleven townships have no representation whatever upon their county ticket. The republicans divided as fairly as possible. Eight townships are represented by eight candidates. The offices are distributed and Greeneastle gets but one—all she is entitled to. Voter think of this between now and November!

The saying of William McKinley at Columbus, Ohio, June 17, 1891, was clear, He said “Better risk

A vote for one or all three of the latter, for Buis is as much a democrat as either of the others, is a vote for the same kind of misrnanagers who have wrecked the gov eminent of the United States, running it behind $5,000,000 a month.
