In a neighboring city h eorre apondent has written a local paper a plea in favar of the school enumerators. Here is what he guvs and it is very good adyice: They are neither peddlers nor tramps, but doing an important Ottk'la'l work. One lady enumerator was met by a harsh manly voice through the half open door, with: •‘What do you want?” Politeness is appreciated. Don't keep them waiting too long after they ring the bell at your door. They are human and grow impatient. In some instances the inmates of the homes have been known to be present, yet refuse to open the door. This is exasperating. The neighbors can not always tell whether your chiidren are of school age or not, and then they must make another trip to liud out the facts. The long walk up steps and down again makes them tired and nervous. If you will kindly oifer them a seat while they do their waiting, they will fully appreciate such kindness. Their books are expected to tie kept neat and nicely written. It is amusing to find so many men who caunot give the names and ages of their children correctly.

Washington, April 13, 1800. Mr. Cleveland has paid sufficient deference to these Cuban resolutions to ask Spain to accept the mediation of the C. S. in negotiating with the Cuban insurgents I'er peace ; tint according to current gossip, lie doesn’t wish .Spain to agree and doesn’t expect it. According to stories whispered in inside circles, the fine hand of ex-SecretarV Billy Whitney is playing the game for Mr. Cleveland, having succeeded in persuading him that the only salvation of the democratic party lies in working up feeling toward.- a war with Spain. I'he offer to mediate is made for the purpose of convincing ihe world that the administration favors a peaceable sett lenient and will only resort toother methods when Spain refuses to entertain mediation, and to gam time. War is not wanted now; it might be all over before the meeting of the democratic national convention, not to mention the November election. It is a deep game to take advantage of the general sympathy of thi- country for Cuba to boo-t up the tottering democratic party, and to go into it was necessary for .Mr. Cleveland to go against Ids real wishes, as lie had been from the first apparently
on the side of Spain.

So far as the House is concerned, it would be easy enough to adjourn by the first of May, as there remain only two appropriation bills—fortifications. and general deficiencies—to be di->osed of, and the tir.-t of those will he passed this week. Unless the democratic senators become obstructionists just to delay adjournment, it is regarded as probable that adjournment will occur somewhere itt the neighbor-
hood of May 15th.
