howling for “reform” in Greencastle city arc playing the dog in-the-manger act. These worthies would hare a reduction made in salaries iu Greencastle. Let that be as it may, but let us look into the salary question in Putnam county a little. In '.he county many office holders and several families have grown rich out of public office. The present democratic councilman from the first ward for years held the best office in Putnam county, an office that paid 14000 or higher per year in salary. Me never asked a county commissioner to vote no on his bill as he filed it in the commissioners' court, but he now votes no upon every just allowance in the city council. This salary of $1000 or $4500 or perhaps $5000 has
At (X Very Low! been by law (not by any act of Rate of Interest iFof na,n count - v onicials > cut t0
$2400 per year. The county clerk's salary has been cut from an enormous figure to $2200, the treasurer from a high figure to $2000, the sheriff Irom a princely salary to $2100 and the recorder Irom a fat office to $1400. These salaries were cut with the expiration of terms of officers elected in 1800. Now where has there been I any reduction in county taxes on account of this slump in salaries? Also where is there any in contemplistion’ Taxes in Putnam county are getting higher continually, and salaries are considerably lower. True the people pay nearly as much in fees into these offices but where is the gain? It taxes and running expenses are to continue at a high figure and higher than they were with high salaries, who is henefittedV Is the people a gainer by the new arrangement? We think not. And it might be ssid that the Putnam county people will never profit by any reduction in salaries in Putnam eounty. The mismanaging officers in the court house will find a sinkhole for eyery cent that comes iu and then will cry for more, and the people pay that more in increased taxes. Here is a beautiful ex amide of reduction of salaries. Democrats of Putnam county never lowered any salaries. In fact the office-holders fought it, contributing money to a lobby at Indianapolis to defeat the salary law. But with a heavy reduction, Putnam's taxes are higher and the farmer’s land is worth less than it was. Should democracy or any hybrid combination with democrats be successful in the citj', there would be no‘•reform” as democrats are want to call it. Taxes would be higher and there would be nothing to show for money spent. This is the record of the democratic party in Putnam county. Why think of giving them an oppor-
tunity in the city?
