The defeat of Messrs. Riley and Bridges for couneilmanic nomination can in no wise be construed us any reflection on the official course of those two gentlemen. They have been faithtul members of the council for four years each ami they are now but at the end of terms that areas full of years as fall to the average lot of men. The disposition m these political days is to pass offices around and to give lint four years of office to any man, and the voting public generally stives the preference to some one else when there* are several candidates for an ofliec along with one who h is filled the ottice four years. Messrs. Riley and Bridges v.iil leave the council after having filled in a careful and painstaking manner otliees that they have held the allotted time as set by the unwritten law of American politics.

TAX-i-Avrus in Putnam are now rounding up a season of paying increased taxes for value not received. From all quarters comes the e ouplaint over the poor condition of roads that are being repaired by favored contractors. Twelve thousand dollars is a large sum to waste during these hard times for nothing. If tliere was something to show as a nstilt it would not lie so bad, but in Putnam there are no results under democratic rule.

The democrats are winding up this week the hitteiest local fight thev have ever had for county office. The lenders are working all kinds of tricks on the candidates and there is a grim determination to have certain men win whether or no. A great many good democrats will not go to the polls they claim, being disgusted at the interference of the ring. The ring candidate will win.

THEIR DEFENSE.
Jackson and Walling Cases Take
a New Turn-
in a special to the Indianapolis Journal it is said that the attorneys in the Jackson and Walling cases have builded a strong defense in ' behalf of the prisoners. A prominent criminal lawyer of Cincinnati says: “The theory of tlie defense is that neither of the men was the murderer. The defense will us sumi' that wiien I’earl Bryan cam'' to Cincinnati she was induced to go to a physician, who is really tinguilty party. She died while under
the influence of drugs.
“Neither Jackson nor Walling was present at the time, bin were sent for and thn atened with exposure by the physician unless they would at once dispose ot tlie body. Jackson threatened to involve the operator, and the three joined in the after proceeding®. George Jack son tells a straight story. Tip* only circumstance which will mitigate against his evidence is that he lias not related the truth of his
meeting with Jackson, of the matter is he
quaiuted with the physician, and the theory of the del- use is that, fearing he would he criminally involved, prepared and shrewdly gave to an ollicer a story which «as calculated to cover Ins criminal knowledge. If you look over the list of
