Sherman and Hill were the conspicuous figures in the Cuban debate in the senate yesterday. The New York senator forcibly urfring the mercenary charttcler of the pending resolutions while Mr. Sherman upheld them with another graphic arraignment of Spain and General Weyler. The suit is the result of the sensational arrest and trial of Riggs some time ago on the charge of embezzling funds belonging to the order. The state failed to make a cast and Riggs now seeks damages for libel at the bauds of his chief accuser. Gardner.

Lafayette, Ind., March 13.—Pretty Miss Ward and Theodore Woodruff were to have been married. His affianced desired him to call on Mrs. Walker Baugher, a dressmaker, and secure her wedding dress, and leave it at her house. Woodruff called, only to ftnd that the dross was not finished. This angered him so much that, drawing a knife, he attempted to kill Mrs. Baugher, cutting her severely on the hands and arms. He was arrested and taken to jail. His affianced, on hearing of the trouble, promptly called the engage-
ment off.
Dr. Finney, who performed it, said: The operation whs entirely successful. The negatives showed exactly the location of the blade and enabled us to make a definite diagnosis of the cause of the trouble before operating. On motion of Mr. Johnson (Rop., Ind.) a resolution was adopted by which the claim of Mr. Coleman (Kep„La.) to the seat of Mr. Buck (Deni.) was decided in favor of the latter. Then Mr. Daniels (Dent., N. Y.) called up the contested election case of Aldrich \ Robbins from the Fourth Alabama district in which the Rupublicans recommended the seating of Aldrich. Three hours and a half, he said, were to be allowed on each side for argument. Mr. Moody (Rep., 5lass.) supported Mr. Aldrich’s claim and was followed by Mr. Bartlett (Dem., Ga.) for Mr. Robbins. The speech of Mr. Linney (Hep., N. O.) in favor of seating the contestant was the feature of the day in which lie denounced southern election frauds in vehement terms. Mr. Roy so (Rep., Ind.) closed the debate with a speech in favor of seating Mr. Aldrich. The
