READ THIS WONDERFUL TESTIMONIAL FROM AN EDITOR. Office Kingfisher Ti mks King fisher. Ok la., Dec. l'2. 1S9;;. Gentlemen:—! believe it my duty to write you a line iti regard to the oeneticlal effects of your “Four-C Remedy,” so far as I am personally concerned. A week ago last Thursday I was taken with a very severe attack of La Grippe, and in a short time became so hoarse 1 could not speak above a whisper. I was confined to my bed the greater part of several days. The night previous I bad coughed nearly the entire night; just before retiring 1 took a teaspoonful, and slept the entire night as sweetly as ever 1 dbl in mv life, not coughing once. I was entirely relieved before taking one bottle. Phelps’Cough, Cold and Croup Cure should be in every household in the land. 1 send you this wholly unsolicited by any one, for you are benefactors of the race in giving it the antidote for some of the worst affiieations to which it is heir. Yours \ • rj truly, C. J. STshitt. Editor. WE ENJOY UNBROKEN REST AT NIGHTS. Chicago, November 22, 18W. It. It. Phelps, Ksq. Dear sir : —As a rule I have been skeptical of the merits of proprietary medicines, but have to confess that a test of your Four “C” is convincing (hat at leas** one ready-made remedy is worthy of general use. My children all take it without the least objection, and it is particularly noticeable that benefit is almost immediate. \ slui'lc dose will check most coughs in the beginning. We now enjoy unbroken rest at night. In my family Four “C” is simply indispensable, and I recommend it un<iualiti< > dly. Yours, Ktc., ,1 IL Hu Li no. 196 south Clark Street. ONE OF CHICAGO'S SOCIETY LADIES SAYS: Chicago, September 25th, 18m. For years back cacti winter 1 have suffered with acute Laryngitis. Last winter was so bad I could not leave my room for two weeks or speak above a whisper. 1 tried every known cough preparation from cough drons np and down with no relief, then In desperation I was induced to try Phelps’ Four“(’.” The first dose relieved my cough, giving me the first night’s rest tor weeks. Rev. Asher Preston had a large audience in Plato hail yesterday afternoon, while he delivered his tilting tribute to Wendell Phil lips, as the “Knight ot the Nine teenth Century.” It requires a muster’s eloquence to justly portrav the character of such a masterful man, and those in attendance are unanimous in declaring that Mr. Preston did not fail at any point to bring out all the strength of character with which Phillips was endowed. For an hour .and a half Mr. Preston held the audience by the wonderful genius which he displayed in setting forth the life, deeds and thoughts of the great man Phillips. Should Mr. Preston return again he will oe warmly welcomed, and greeted by another crowded hall. Among our honored alumni Mr. Preston surely occupies a prominent part. The following promotions ha\c been made in tho military depart meat: Sarg. Major. Mr. Poucher; 1st Sarg., Harper; Corporals, Messrs, Hawk, Starr. Valiva and Volgie. Mr. Brockaway has gone to Mil watikee on account of the serious illness of his sister at that place. Foghorn Lewis is in fine condition for the stampede tomorrow. ShakxtpMtre’a Heroine*. The fact that boys acted his heroines ; may have impelled Shakespeare to present his Rosalind, Imogen, Julia and Viola in donblet and hose, because in male attiro tho boys must have looked ! and acted their best. Il is more easy to conceive a male representative of Lady Macbeth l.:an of Juliet, but vve, with our advantages, can never be wholly reconciled to tho idea of u woman j played by a man. Tho greatest revolution in tho history of the modern drama was the introduction of women upon the stage. This change was caused not merely by ait considerations, but arose in part from the laxity of morals and of manners at the restoration; hut nevertheless what a mighty and beneficent change it was ! What gifts and grace, what loveliness, purity, tenderness, genius, charm, have been shown to the delighted world since women have been played by women within the confines of the magio wooden Ol How did, how could, the players of Shakespeare’s time procure boys of such iutelligeuce, beau ty, delicacy of miud, that they could worthily personate pure, lovely, noble

women?

Could we now tolerate any youth in such parts as Imogen, Desdemoua, Juliet? Still it must be remembered that the boys who first acted such characters were probably trained, inspired, instructed by the master himself, and he may well have done wonders. It was a hard condition, and twin born with Shakespeare’s dramatic greatness, that he should see his women played by lads. Could he ever have been wholly satisfied with the result?—Gentleman's

Magazine.

He Wax Too Itealiatie. Last winter a number of literary people indulged from time to time in amateur theatricals. During February they produced a comedy. One of the actors played tho part of a burglar, and had to climb up tho outside of the house iu which the entertainment was given and enter through the window which was at the rear of the improvised stage. He hurried round from tho dressing rooms and valiantly commenced to struggle up tho wall, when a policeman grasped him by the neck, thinking him a veritable burglar. He started to explain, but the minion of the law would have none of it. The audience was wondering in the meantime why the play did not proceed, and the yonng actors and actresses on tho stage were eagerly waiting for tho burglar to enter and give them tboir cue, when they heard shrieks, yells, oaths and threats from the garden. Rushing out they found tho master burglar i thrashing wildly about tho grass, while a brawny policeman sat on his shoulders j hammering his neck into the mud.— ! Strand Magazine. Implicated. A real Mr. Malaprop v. :ia discovered the other afternoon in tho person of a Broadway (’able car conductor. The our was on a down town trip and had few passengers until it reached Fourteenth street. There half a dozen people, five women and ono man, got aboard. Three of tho wonieu and the man found seats together, but tho other two went to another part of the car, thereby leaving it doubtful aa to whether they were members of tho party or uot. The man with the three, instead cf giving the exact change, offered a half dollar in payment of the fares, and the conductor was as much iu the dark us ever. To inquire was plainly tho only way to arrive at the truth. With a polite wave of his hand toward the two women in the ! farther corner he asked blandly,‘‘Are those ladies implicated?”—New York
