Typhoid I’tiTsr.
Typhoid !• now admitted by all scientists to be caused by a venom microbe that swarms by the million in the tissues ' of the small intestines, producing fever, delirium, extreme prostration, putrifaction aud death. The medical profession has earnestly sought a reliable antidote for this mortal plague aud found none. Hence it is a bold, an almost startling claim, (a claim never before dared to be

Count}' Attorney Ader has been rcemployed at six times his former salary. He took the job last year at $2r> and this year geis $150, a haudsome increase. True he is to do the pauper practice in the cir euit court which fact shuts out some of the aspiring young lawyers of this bar from an occasional fee. The bid of Mr. Ader winds up as follows: “For all cases or suits on behalf of or against the county board or any county officer in any court other than the-commissioners court, reasonable attorneys fees to
be paid.”
Now the Banner Times would like to ask why is it tiie commissioners wanted to add that last clause. The records show that in the past year or so the county at torney has greatly needed assist aace, and in another column we show where a $000 fee has been pulled of!' by the county attorney and an assistant. There is no need of that last clause in the bid It throws down tlie liars and permits the county attorney to step into cases of county officers ami the board that they might want to manage differently. This thing of advice to the county board is something of n farce anyhow. If the county board wants an attorney they should hire one on a definite salary. Then if they should want counsel for officers or in other courts they could so into the open market and employ it. A sliding contract is a poor one in any event. If the board wants a $150 attorney let their contract stop there. Don’t, in advance, contract for “reasonable fees” in other cases that the county attorney is obliged to seek aid in. The tax payers should watch this leak tn finances of Putnam county caused by this judicial department. AmictMl with ISoils. South Bend, lud.. The case came up before Judge McGregor, and Bowen by his attorneys filed a demurrer to the complaint. The taxpayers of Putnam county, who are now paying it. for it wiM never be brought back into the treasury without u fight, should register a kick. Tlie Banner Times was met with the bland statement that the lawyers’ $600 would he taxed up against the parties losing the suit along with the court costs, but we would like to see the democratic or other authority for any sin li action. The county so far is out $ iuO and we venture it will he a long time before it collects it back, and the suit is not settled. It is said on behalf of the commissioners who allowed the big claim, tbat the lawyers were to get a “liberal” fee if they got the ease reversed.
