Mrs. Mattie Bradshaw went to Mancie today to visit her daughter, Mrs. Wallace MeIIvain. Mrs. Hutcheson, of Hamrick Station, and Mrs. Lydick, of Danville, are visiting their brother, Dr. Bence. J. B. Tucker, of the Greencastle Manufacturing company, is able to be out after a severe attack of sickness. J. V. Durham is at home from Martinsville but will return there in order to complete ids treatment for rheuma-
tism.

We have received the Tribune Almanac and political register from New York of which Harry E. Rhoades is editor. The Almanac is more complete than ever this year. It is easily the standard Almanac of the year and iedited with a care that makes its data absolutely correct. It at this time is particularly valuable on account of its figures and political matters. A tramp tried a new dodge on Sunday. He hung around the Presbyterian church and after the service- were over enquired for a prominent member. He was directed to John Cross and visited that gentleman's house. He tried to work the pious act but John would’t have it that way and told the fellow to travel. These impostors do not hesitate to clothe their shortcomings iu any kind of garbin order to secure a square meal. In one of the priinaty grades the city public schools the other day the teacher gave the scholars a quiz on the subject: What arimal is the most useful to man. The answers were varied and unique, the horse and the dog predominating. One young lad knew better, however, and after some hesitation confidentially told the young lady teselier that a woman was the more useful animal toman! That lad will he president some day. John Townsend and Henry Bridges did not bebate the question “Which has the best opportunities, the negroes of the north or tht negroes of I he south” la-t evening at the Literary society.
