Mrs. Jasper Jenkins slipped and fell la*t evening at her home on East Bloomington street and suffered a severe bruise on the head and injuries to her back. Although no bones were broken the shock was very severe and it will take her several days to recover

from it.

The opera house was well lilled when the curtain went up last evening lor “O’Hooligan’s Masquerade.” The gaiety gods were especially numerous. The songs and dancing were the chief features of the entertainment and with some new take off's furnished considerable cause for laughter. Association may have something to do with last night's oratorical. Mr. Ewing rehearsed Ins speech directly over tlie Banner Times sanctum, and Mr. Dimmit, who won several years ago, did likewise. Mr. Hall, who won second last night, has been in this neighborhood conslderablv Ipuiself. Dan Kessier, u Vandalia section man living at Limedale, met with a painful mishap last night. Some one had carelessly left a handcar on tlie track, which is against the company’s rules, and in the darkness Kesler ran into it with such force as to break a rib and cause him much pain. Dr. Hawkins unended his wants. Tlie story is told of a Greencastle drug clerk, who when asked by a customer for some bay rum, refused on the ground tiiat lie was not allowed to sell any kind of rum without a prescription, under tlie Nicholson law. The customer repaired to another drug shop and tlie young prescription clerk congratulated himself upon having done Ids duty to tiie very letter of the law. The town is again afflicted with tramps, who come any go in large numbers. The tender large hearted people who have always felt a sympathy for them, are getting tired of having their kindness abused, and their refusals to hand out feed lias made tlie tramps impertinent and many cases of impudem a are reported. The police cannot he too strict with these warts on humanity. Tlie weather for tin* oast three weeks has been m remarkable contrast with that of tlie same time a year ago. Then no one could venture out without putting on all tlie wearing apparel he could comfortably handle, while at the pres ent lots of people do not wear overcoats, except in the evening, and it is not unusual to see a man in his shirt sleeves. The ground hog will shortly appear on the scene and* will tell us whither or not we can expect this weather to continue. Mr. Hicks’say-so does not go against the ground ling’s. Mrs. Williams and daughters, Misses Rose and A Hie, went to Ladoga at noon to spend Sunday. Mrs,John Keller is expected home from Linton this afternoon. George Ward is at home from Chicago for a week's stay. Mrs. .Vj Rotli went to Chicago at noon for a visit. Roy Abrams will soeud Sunday in

South ttreeucaatle. Alex Davenport is at home from his visit at Indianapolis. Dan O'Connell slipped and fell while alighting from a wagon tn front of his house this morning. His ankle was badly sprained. As the result of a few moments rough house at Dan Rouland’sl quart shop last night John Hughes, j who played a leading part, has an ugly gash in his head and James Brummet is in jail awaiting the ac-1 tion of the mayor's court. Both ; men are said to have been drunk j and began the trouble with a I friendly scuttle over a pipe but in their condition were in no way fit for such a bout and were soon fighting furiously. Brummet gtabbed up an empty beer bottle and struck Hughes an awful blow which laid open a large gash in the side of his head. Policeman Riley, attracted by the commotion, arrested Brummet but Hughes was too badly hurt to lie taken in custody. Dr. Brazier took the wounded man in charge. Tlie men are said to be the best of friends when sober.
