It was far larger than many republican conventions of former years that hove hail the business of nominating a county ticket in hand. This is one of tile facts that stick in the democratic craw. It shows that the republicans have taken the initiative and have set the pace, and pages of democratic literature will not change the elfect of the lajge gathering. The BannkrTimks was right in pronouncing it a good one. The Star Press which got real gay last week in writing up the obituary of Willis Bunn, deceased, elirnhes down off its perch handsomely this week and says it was misinformed in stating that Mr. Bunn had died in the county asylum. The paper adds that it is glad to make the correction and that it regrets exceedingly that the error was printed. The apology is to the point and should settle the matter, but we would suggest that political clap trap written in obitu ary notices are very dangerous things to fool with. Better leave politics and effusions on political moves to the living.
There is a well grounded opinion afloat that the Star Press can not ccint, hence we are not sur prised at that paper coming out anti boldly stating toda}’ that the republicans had but two dozen at th# opening of their meeting last Saturday.
By the Republican County Committee as ChairmanThe Kepubiican County Central committee met at ten o’clock this morning at the mayor’s oflice for permanent orsianizat ion for the campaign of 189*). At the hourap pointed there was a good number of lepublican committeemen present and later additions swelled the attendance to near the full limit. The meeting was called to order by the retiring chairman Thomas T.Moore. The matfer of electing a chairman for the ensuing campaign was the first business of the meeting. Mr. Charles B. Case was put in nomination and hi* eleeticn made unanimous. Mr. Case lias been connected with Putnam politics for the past ten 3'ears. Mr. Case firmly believes that Putnam county can and will be carried for republicanism this year ami in this belief he lias the backing of a united, ac tive body of hustling republicans. The other ollicers of the commit tee were chosen by acclamation. Thomas T. Moore, the retiring chairman, was made vice chairman, Arthur Throop was chosen secretary and immediately went to work. General Harrison lias come out like a man and authorized his secretary to give out the following information: "General Harrison authorizes the announcement that he and Mrs. Dimmick are engaged to be married, and that the marriage will not take place untill after Lent.” This puts at rest the gossip concerning the matrimonial matter of the great Indianian. The Putnam democratic papers are devoting much space in an attempt to belittle last Saturday’s convention. The meeting was one for business and to have a speech.
prosperity, that the republican legislation which made this condition i was, as the democratic leaders' would have us believe, repudiated 1 by the people, and the democratic, policy of British . free-trade aatl, wildcat money indorsed. I do not; believe it. If they act upon that belief they will 'be promptly repudiated the people. Not only has the year 1892 registered au era, of conspicuous progress and unexampled prosperity, but it witnessed a national administration under President Harrison unexcelled in honest3', power and patriotism by any of its predecessors. Of this rich inheritance the democratic | party becomes the trustee for the people. It is my hope that it may suffer no loss or waste in their hands. I wish the country could be assured it would not.
