The absorption of the Yandalia by the Pennsylvania company gives the latter in its southwestern system 2,12.’l miles of main line and an unbroken main line from Pittsmirg to St. Louis of (ils miles, with fill) locomotives, 17^ passenger ears and over 20,000 freight

Dr. J. C. Ridpath of this city, lias an article in tlih Arena for January on the “Bond and the Dollar.” The paper covers several pages and has lengthy footnotes and ligures of explanation. The current issue of the article will be followed by others in the forthcoming Arenas. The Roachdale bank lust week reelected the following directors: J. W. Siitherlin, J. T. Edwards, T. E. Tobin, John Dodd, I. C. Weddle, W. D. Barnes, and G. W. Sutpierliu. A dividend of nine per cent was declared and a two per cent surplus was added to the surplus fund. Miss Medit Stoner entertained some of her friends Saturday evening at her home two miles west of the city. Gaines and dancing occupied the evening until (juite late and when the guests departed it was witli the unanimous declaration that the occasion had liecn a grand success. Miss Olive, the daughter of Prof. John Poucher. treasurer and professor of Hebrew in DePauw University, Greencastle, has been engaged by the city school hoard as teacher in the Wabash high school, succeeding Miss Jennie Pettit, resigned. She begins her work next week. Saturday evening Noah Stranther was out taking a sleigh ride behind one of q. M. Black's spirited steeds. He turned the corner at College Avenue and Seminary street at a pretty swift gait, and consequently the sleigh was overthrown and the driver was thrown on Ins head striking a curb stone and haeaking his nose. James Bridges bought of Jesse M. Jones thirty-five head of steers, twenty months of age which averaged per head in weight 1032 pounds, price paid 4 e. per pound. They were weighed up on last Monday after having been fed 120 days, making an average gain per head in that length of time of 320 lbs. or 2 7-12 pounds per head for each day. forts.

Great indignation it lelt in Muncie because of the action of some of the public school teachers in deliberately telling their pupils that there is no such personage us Santa Claus and that their parents had been deceiving them in saying that there is. Even aside from the unfavorable position in which the j parents arc thus placed, which is ! certainly bad enough, the action of the teachers is veiy ill advised. The mythical Santa Claus is one of I the most happy remembrances of childhood and no child or parent j was ever hartne l by the infantile delusion. We should sincerely pity the child who never knew of the
mythical Santa Clause.
