The EpistU that TaASert Iletwd«n the MinisterA of the City* On Friday last Elder A. H. Morris, of the Christian church received a letter signed by the pastors of three other city churches. We present herewith a copy of the original letter, all the parlies concerned in the same having agreed to its publication. The Banner Times prints the i-pistle as a matter ot news. It is as follows: (iliKK.VCAST'.K, Ind. Rev. A. H. Morris, Pastor Christian Church :

Pear Brother:

We the pastors of the city feel much grieved at the unchristian attacks am’ criticisms upon our churches and denominations by your evangelist, Mr. Boyer. You anil your people have here-to-fore pretended to be friends to t'..e oilier denomination. You have not hesitated to ask members of our churches time and time again to assist you in erecting your church. Our people have responded gladly and liberally to help you as a sister church. Your people have met witli

our people in

us to believe that von recognize us as what we claim to be, Christian people on an equality with you. But now you bring Mr. Boyer to your church, and evening after evening permit him from your pulpit to criticise our churches; to endeavor to influence people against us; to give forth an impression that heaven is a place for >our church alone; to go personally to young members of our churches, and taking advantage of their youtn. endeavored to persuade them that they were not baptized, ami only through your church could salvation be bad. Now the main foundation of all christain fellowship is a recognition of

equality.

We therefore respectfully and in the name of our common Master, ask you whether you and your people endorse the statements of Mr. Boyer from your

pulpit.

Also tell us plainly whether you and your people hold and teach that yours is the only Biblical church, and that Methodists and Presbyterians and Epis-

copal.* are wrong.

Also please tell us plainly if Mr. Boyer is right in stating that it is the belief of your church that immersion is

essential to salvation.

We await your immkdiatk rkpi.v to this communication. Address either of us. W. K. Wkavkr,

Washington, Dec. 23, 1895.

Mr. Cleveland, like many other smart men, did not know when to let well enough alone. He made the hit of his life when he sent that message iu favor of the Monroe doctrine to congress. But he mistook the applause for the sentiments in the mosage for applause for himself and his egotism thought that because congress promptly adopted his recommendation for the appointment of a commission to ascertain the real boundary between British Guiana and Venezuela that it was ready to anything else he wanted done. So he joined the British who were trying to punish the I'uited States for daring to stand up for the Monroe doctrine by forcing us into a financial panic, and >ent a special message to congress urging immediate financial legislation and

union services, leaning asking that no Christmas recess he

taken until some sucli legislation as retiring the greenbacks or authorizing an issue of gold bonds should have been

put through.

In saying that it was Mr. Cleveland’* egotism that caused him to write that financial message it is putting a very charitable construction upon his act. Others do not hesitate to say that he did it because lie was rattled by the British attacks upon our finances and by a call which was issued by the Xew York Chamber of Commerce for a meeting to condemn the Monroe doctrine message. He is said to have se.it a member of the cabinet to Xew York to prevent that meeting and his messenger is reported to have made a deal whereby tlie meeting was declared off and Mr. Cleveland's hysterical tuessage was

sent to congress.

So far as congress and the American people are concerned, the message will do neither good or harm—congress will provide for the deficit with tariff legislation—hut it will unquestionally do much harm to our interests in England, it will cause the British to think that Mr. Cleveland has become frightened and already regrets his belligerent message; and it will also encourage them to keep up their scheming to throw us inti a financial panic. Xo possible good can be accomplished by congress remaining in session during Christmas week, because even if the House had already passed the measure whicli will be reported from tile Ways and Means committee, the senate would not lie prepared to act on it until its reorganization has been accomplished. The silver men in the Senate, who have an unquestioned majority, say nothing can pass that doesn’t provide in some way for a more extended use of silver. Speaker Reed’s committee assignments contain some personal disappointments, but that wa* under the circumstances unavoidable; there were more leading republicans than there were leading places. But it is creditable to those wtio were disappointed that they have accepted the situation philosophically. Representative Payne, of Xew York, merely keeps his old place on the Ways and Means committee. the chairmanship going to Representative Dingley, of Maine, hut Mr. Payne is given in addition the chairmanship of the committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, which is an unusual honor, us members of the Ways am! Means committee are, seldom given chairmanships. Cannon, of Illinois, got tlie chairmanship of the committee on Appropriations, hut Henderson, of fowa, ids rival for that honor, got a much coveted place on tlie committee on Rules, as did Hulzell, of Pennsylvania, who was at one time thought to lie iu line for ih * head of the Ways and Means committee. Walker, of Massachusetts, got tlie Banking am) Currency chairmanship, and Hitt, of Illinois, that of Foreign Affairs, as it had been understood all along they would, hut tiiere were lots of surprise* among the minor chairmanships. Admiral Meade, U. S. X., in a lecture on “The Caribbean 8ea” took occasion to say tlie ho considered tlie superiority of tlie individual vessels of our navy an offset for the excess of vessels in the British Navy which was sufficient to prevent any fe»r on our part of a contest. He also said : “I am no prephet nor son of a prophet, but i predict here tonight that should war bitween the United States and Great Britain come, the first shot fired in anger will sound the death knell of the British Empire.” Senator Mitchell, of Oregon, in introducing a bill for the restoration ot the duty on wool took occasion to notify th* Senate that he would offer the bill as an amendment to any tariff hill that might be nqiorted from the Finance committee. But the general belief is that Senator Mitchell will not lie put to that trouble, because any bill amending the tarifl that i* reported is likely to provide for a duty on wool. Republican* have claimed ever since the result of the election was known that the election of a republican successor to Senator Blackburn by the Kentucky legislature was a certainty, and now Kentucky democrats openly admit the claim and acknowledge that they have no show, even with the votes of the two populists.
